π️Day 663 that 50 of our hostages are still in Hamas captivityπ️
- PM says ‘obstinate’ Hamas blocking hostage deal, as he weighs annexing parts of Gaza
Defense official says talks ‘frozen,’ confirms Israel considering annexation as tool to pressure Hamas; alarmed by conditions in Strip, FMs from UK, France and Germany may visit IsraelPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that the Hamas terror group’s “obstinacy” was preventing a hostage-ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip, as an Israeli defense source confirmed to The Times of Israel that officials have bandied about several potential next steps amid the impasse in negotiations, including beginning annexation of parts of the enclave.
After pulling their negotiators from talks in Qatar last week, US and Israeli leaders promised to explore new ways to bring home the 50 hostages still held in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Netanyahu met Tuesday afternoon with top advisers to discuss the captives, with a picture published by his office showing he was joined by government hostage point man Gal Hirsch, political advisor Ophir Falk and chief of staff Tzachi Braverman.
After the meeting, Netanyahu posted a video message on X, in which he squarely blamed Hamas for the stalled negotiations.
The prime minister began by noting that, in addition to his Tuesday meeting, “There was a meeting [about the hostages] yesterday. Two days ago, there was a meeting. The day before that, there was a meeting, too.”
“Since the delegation returned from Qatar, we haven’t stopped trying,” he said. “But there is one major obstacle, and everyone knows it — Hamas. It remains obstinate in its refusal.”
“[United States] President Trump said it, [US special envoy Steve] Witkoff said it, we’re saying it — everyone who knows the facts, including the mediators, knows it,” Netanyahu continued. “We are not letting up. We will continue to do everything we can — by one path or another. We are committed to bringing them home.”
Annexation among several ideas discussed in recent meetings
Netanyahu convened the meeting as an Israeli defense official told The Times of Israel that “talks are frozen.”

“Hamas still hasn’t come back to the table” with a new offer, the official said.
Netanyahu will hold further consultations on Gaza over the next two days, the official added.
The official confirmed that annexing parts of the Strip is one of several ideas that have been bandied about in recent meetings.
The Hebrew-language Maariv daily reported on Monday that Netanyahu recently presented the annexation proposal in a meeting with a small group of ministers, who decided to establish a special entity for administering annexed areas.
Two sources told ABC News that annexation is “one of several options” being explored by Netanyahu.
Reversing such a move in the future would be extremely difficult. Under Israeli law, withdrawing from territory that has been formally annexed requires either the support of 80 lawmakers in the Knesset or a national referendum.
Witkoff said last week that the US would explore “alternative options” to free the hostages, and Trump indicated that he would support Israel moving ahead with military operations to try to “get rid of” Hamas.
“Now possibly the fight will have to be a little bit different,” said Trump in Scotland on Monday, adding that he told Netanyahu that “you’re going to have to now maybe do it a different way.”
Though the Trump administration has shown firm support for Israel’s war on Hamas, European allies have been busy searching for ways to pressure Israel to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza and to end the war.
The EU’s executive body on Monday recommended curbing Israeli access to its flagship Horizon research funding program.
Also Monday, the Netherlands banned far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir from entering the country. The Dutch government also summoned Israel’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Modi Ephraim, to denounce the “unbearable and indefensible” situation in Gaza.
Sa’ar to Dutch envoy: Palestinian state ‘ain’t gonna happen’
On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar summoned Dutch Ambassador to Israel Marriet Schuurman for a reprimand over the measures the kingdom is pursuing against Israel.
According to his office, Sa’ar told her that the Netherlands “harmed the chances of reaching a ceasefire in Gaza and a plan for the release of hostages, strengthened Hamas’s refusal and actually raises the likelihood of a military escalation.”

Despite the European campaign, senior Israeli officials pledged on Tuesday that they would see the war through to victory over Hamas.
In a briefing to foreign journalists in Jerusalem, Sa’ar said that the “distorted campaign of international pressure” to end the war against Israel would not work.
“It ain’t gonna happen,” he said. “No matter how much pressure is put on Israel.”
And in a visit to the Tel Hashomer recruitment center, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel must retain its freedom of action in Gaza, even after the war comes to an end.
“In order for Hamas to no longer be effective, the IDF must have the ability — like in the West Bank — to operate securely in every location there,” he said. “We ourselves must be responsible for security in Gaza.”
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich told a conference that rebuilding settlements in Gaza is now a “realistic” option.
Addressing a conference at the Gush Katif Heritage Center marking two decades since Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza, the far-right minister said he does “not want to go back to Gush Katif — it’s too small, it needs to be much bigger, much more expansive.”
Gush Katif was the major bloc of Israeli settlements in Gaza before the Disengagement, housing some 8,500 people in 17 communities.
Germany, France, and UK may send FMs to Israel
Alarmed over the humanitarian situation in the Strip, Germany, France and Britain are considering sending their foreign ministers to Israel next week, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.
“We will probably ask the three foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom and Germany to travel to Israel together next Thursday to present the position of … the three governments,” Merz told a press conference in Berlin alongside Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
The leading international authority on food crises said Tuesday the “worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip,” predicting “widespread death” without immediate action.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification’s warning followed other reports of an increasingly dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
Those reports led Israel on Sunday to declare that it would implement daily “tactical” pauses of fighting in swathes of Gaza, along with several other changes, to allow for the safe distribution of humanitarian aid.
Israel has denied using hunger as a weapon of war and has accused the United Nations and other aid agencies of failing to pick up and distribute supplies delivered to Gaza’s border crossing points.
It isn’t only in Europe where Israel sees its support for Gaza slipping. A new Gallup poll found that about six in 10 US adults disapprove of the military action Israel has taken in Gaza, up from 45% a month after the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, which sparked the war.
The rising disapproval is driven by Democrats and independents, while Republicans remain largely supportive of both Israel’s military actions and Netanyahu.
In a new low, only 8% of Democrats and one-quarter of independents said they now approve of Israel’s military campaign. link Netanyahu has finally lost it entirely. It is nothing new that he blames Hamas for the breakdown of hostage negotiation talks. That he always does and refuses to take any blame that he has been the main destructor of all talks purposely because he has refused to end the war. He still holds on to the notion that, with more pressure, Hamas will be totally flexible and give in to all Netanyahu's demands including releasing hostages without any talk or guarantee of ending the war. Those of us who understand know that he understands best of all that Hamas does not budge from their bottom line no matter what. All the senior leaders could be dead, all the senior officers could be dead, they could barely be breathing themselves but they will never change their bottom line. Netanyahu continues to sell the illusion that he himself knows has no hope of changing and by selling it and having it accepted by the likes of Trump keep him in his position of prime minister and enables him to keep his failed coalition together. That is all he cares about, not the hostages, not the soldiers and certainly not the Gazans. So, now he is reaching the point that he is once again allowing his extremist messianic coalition partners to be the tail that wags the entire dog. Their dream is to annex all of Gaza, get rid of the Palestinians, set up Jewish settlements throughout, and they gained Trump's blessings with his ludicrous plan for Trump's Riviera in Gaza. That was all they needed and have spent so much of their time and energies pushing this plan and pushing Netanyahu. Netanyahu, in the meantime has also convinced Trump that Hamas cannot be brought to make a deal and he needs to go ahead with 'alternative' plans for Gaza which will end up getting all of the hostages killed. Trump doesn't understand any of this and allows Netanyahu to sell him his snake oil, so Netanyahu feels further strengthened to give in to his extremist partners because he gains strength to his coalition and the ability to further put off elections and an independent official committee of inquiry about October 7, all that went before and all that came after. His successes in his games of political survival force us all the pay the price. Shas, UTJ pledge to support any hostage deal brought to a vote despite quitting government
The ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism parties announce that they will support any deal to bring back the hostages placed before the Knesset, saying that “there is no more important mitzvah than the ransoming of captives.”
“Despite the fact that we were forced to withdraw from the government due to repeated violations of agreements by our coalition partners, we are fully committed to our brothers and sisters, the captives in the tunnels in Gaza, both the living and the dead,” the Haredi factions declare in a joint statement.
“Therefore, the factions will provide support for any proposal for a hostage agreement that is brought to the government and the Knesset. There is no more important mitzvah than the ransoming of captives. We once again call on the prime minister to do everything in his power to return our kidnapped brothers and sisters, without exception, to their families as soon as possible.”
Earlier this month, UTJ quit the coalition after being presented with a copy of a proposed enlistment bill prepared by the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee’s then-chairman, Yuli Edelstein. It was quickly followed by Shas, which, while quitting the government, has remained part of the coalition.
Opposition leaders fume, demand firing of minister who called hostages ‘prisoners of war’
Opposition leaders slam Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu for suggesting that Israel define the 50 remaining Gaza hostages as “prisoners of war” rather than hostages, arguing that such rhetoric endangers the hostages’ lives.
Speaking with Radio Kol Chai this morning, Eliyahu, a member of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, said that “the hostages should be defined as prisoners of war. Prisoners of war are only dealt with at the end of the victory. First, Hamas should be defeated.”
“After proposing to drop an atomic bomb on Gaza, and wipe out Gaza, now Amichay Eliyahu proposes abandoning the hostages to their deaths,” declares Opposition Leader Yair Lapid. “If he is not fired today, then the Israeli government is admitting to abandoning the hostages.”
Blue and White-National Unity chief Benny Gantz declares on X that “Israelis kidnapped in the greatest failure in the state’s history are not prisoners of war, and the very comparison endangers their lives and plays into Hamas’s narrative.”
“Also, in order to destroy Hamas’s rule and face all the challenges ahead, we must act to return all the hostages in a single comprehensive framework,” he adds.
“Amichay Eliyahu is simply saying openly what the government is doing and hiding. They decided long ago to sacrifice the hostages and prolong the war indefinitely. For them, this is a time of miracles,” writes Democrats head Yair Golan, in an apparent reference to Settlements and National Projects Minister Orit Strock’s statement last summer that the war had been “like a time of miracles” for the settlement movement.
“The vast majority of Israelis want to live in security and have the hostages back home. The Ben Gvir and Smotrich government wants messianic visions of expulsion, erasure, and settlement. We must fight these people and send them home,” Golan declares.
Far-right minister calls for categorizing hostages as ‘prisoners of war,’ so that defeating Hamas can come first
“Many people prioritize the hostages over victory — this is a mistake,” Eliyahu continues. “I’m calling to release the prisoners of war after the defeat [of Hamas], not before.” link Unfortunately, this vile person who called for totally wiping out Gaza with all of its people, is not alone in these disgusting sentiments. And the fact that he wears a kippa on his head means absolutely nothing. He doesn't live or act according to any Jewish values and ethics. If he did, he would value redeeming prisoners (hostages) as the most important thing in his life and the life of the Jewish people. He would sanctify life, not just his own or of Jews but of all people. He does neither. His nothing but violence, racism, misogyny, and hate, hate, hate for whatever he is against.Ex-hostage Eli Sharabi honored as book recounting his captivity becomes a bestseller
Former hostage Eli Sharabi is honored with a Platinum Award for his bestselling book, “Kidnapped,” which sold more than 70,000 copies in its first five days, making it a bestseller in the Israeli market.
“I didn’t believe there would still be hostages when the book was released,” says Sharabi at a ceremony for the award.
“Kidnapped” was published by Rotem Sela in May.
Sharabi says he hoped the book would be a memory from the past when he wrote it. It is the first testimonial book written by a released hostage after the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack.
“Even 173 days after I was released from captivity — they’re still there,” says Sharabi, referring to the remaining hostages. “Every day I think about them — what they eat, how they survive, how they deal with the constant hunger. We must not get used to this situation. We must not pretend that life goes on while they are not here.”
Sharabi said he hopes the upcoming English translation of the book, being published by HarperCollins in the US ahead of the second anniversary of October 7, will help Americans understand the reality of the hostages.
Hamas political leaders said to fear Israeli assassination attempts amid bid to restart talks
Hamas leaders are bolstering security around themselves over fears that Israel may try to assassinate Politburo members abroad, the Haaretz daily reports, citing Palestinian sources.
Sources also tell Haaretz they worry Israel could launch raids aimed at rescuing hostages.
According to the report, sources say they received conflicting messages in recent hours from countries involved in mediating ceasefire talks regarding the possibility that indirect negotiations with Israel could restart.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier that Hamas’s obstinacy was the main hurdle blocking a ceasefire deal, and US President Donald Trump said yesterday that the “fight will have to be a little bit different” given Hamas’s unwillingness to negotiate.
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt sign declaration calling for Hamas to disarm, leave Gaza at UN 2-state confab
Arab countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have signed onto a statement calling for Hamas to disarm and end its rule of Gaza, in a bid to end the devastating war in the Palestinian territory.
Seventeen countries, plus the European Union and Arab League, are throwing their weight behind a seven-page text agreed at a United Nations conference on reviving the two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians.
“In the context of ending the war in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international engagement and support, in line with the objective of a sovereign and independent Palestinian State,” says the declaration.
The text also condemns the deadly Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023, which launched the war.
France, which is co-chairing the conference with Saudi Arabia, calls the declaration “both historic and unprecedented.”
“For the first time, Arab countries and those in the Middle East condemn Hamas, condemn October 7, call for the disarmament of Hamas, call for its exclusion from Palestinian governance, and clearly express their intention to normalize relations with Israel in the future,” says French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
The text, co-signed by France, Britain, and Canada among other Western nations, also calls for the possible deployment of foreign forces to stabilize Gaza after the end of hostilities.
Israel and its ally, the United States, did not take part in the meeting.
“We supported the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission upon invitation by the Palestinian Authority and under the aegis of the United Nations and in line with UN principles, building on existing UN capacities, to be mandated by the UN Security Council, with appropriate regional and international support,” says the declaration.
Troops uncover kilometer-long tunnel, arms under Khan Younis
IDF troops operating in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis located a kilometer-long Hamas tunnel, the military says.
The tunnel, which the IDF says was 15 meters deep underground, was found by troops of the Golani Brigade and elite Yahalom combat engineering unit.
Inside the tunnel, the forces found weapons belonging to Hamas, including explosive devices, assault rifles, and RPGs, the military says.
The IDF says the tunnel has been partially razed. Video
Belgium coordinating with Jordan to airdrop food aid, medical supplies to Gaza
Belgium will take part in a multi-country operation coordinated by Jordan to airdrop aid to Gaza, the government announces.
A Belgian plane carrying medical supplies and food worth some 600,000 euros ($690,000) will fly “soon” to Jordan, and will remain on standby to conduct airdrops in coordination with Amman, the defense and foreign ministries say in a statement.
22 ministers, lawmakers demand Katz allow settlement group to tour northern Gaza, check locations for future settlements. - This is the most pressing thing for these messianic extremists. They don't care about the lives of the hostages; many have made it crystal clear that they are willing to sacrifice every last one of them in order to reach their messianic goals. They don't care about the lives of the soldiers, not those killed and maimed and not those who would need to stay in Gaza forever to protect these illegal settlements. They don't care about the international blowback being even worse than it is right now because they live in their own Lalaland where no one else matters but them. They don't care that occupying Gaza will cost the country $7 billion a year and bankrupt the country while they will demand that the middle and lower class be taxed even more to support their illegal messianic goals. As far as they are concerned, the only important thing is for them to conquer all the territories, get rid of all the Arabs and create only Jewish settlements.
Egyptian FM: Cairo training hundreds of Palestinians for security jobs in postwar Gaza
In a clip from a yet-to-be-aired interview, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty tells the Saudi Al Arabiya news channel that Egypt has a clear plan for security and governance arrangements in Gaza after the war ends, and that it is training “Palestinian operatives” who will be deployed in the Gaza Strip and assume security roles once the war is over.
He does not specify in the clip if the Palestinians being trained are part of any formal organization, such as the Palestinian Authority.
Abdelatty also says that Egypt holds daily talks with Qatar and the United States amid efforts to forge a ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas.
The foreign minister slams Israel for its actions in Gaza, accusing it of using food as a weapon of war and saying that the level of hunger in the Strip is “beyond imagination.” link Egypt, like other countries in the region besides our own Israel, is making preparations for a post war Gaza that should have been the initiative of Israel from the start of the war. Netanyahu has absolutely refused to deal with post war Gaza throughout, stating time and time again that we will deal with post war when the war is over. That is the thinking of a failed leader, one who can't see beyond his own nose, which is typical for the prime minister who has never had or presented a strategic plan for anything during his entire premiership. The only thing that he ever thinks about and plans for strategically is his own political plan and survival. For that, he has armies of personnel at his disposal and they are a very well oiled machine. It has never been for the benefit of the country.
Back to Egypt, they fully understand that a new governing body must be placed in Gaza as the alternative to Hamas and it has to be a Palestinian body linked to the PA. One of the most important functions must be internal security based on Palestinians and supplemented by security personnel from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, The Emirates and others with one of their first duties to route Gaza of Hamas terrorist fighters, disarm all of them and destroy all of their terror infrastructure. That has to be the job of the Arabs, specifically the Palestinians to get rid of Hamas. Israel will never be able to do it as Hamas is not only the terrorists holding our hostages and attacking our soldiers. Hamas is an idea, an ideology that can only be defeated when there is an alternative that promises a better life. Two said killed, others wounded in shooting near Gaza aid site
Media outlets in Gaza report that two people were killed and several wounded by Israeli fire near an aid distribution center operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in the Netzarim Corridor area.
In addition, there are reports this morning of eight people wounded by Israeli fire at the al-Nabulsi junction in western Gaza City, where they had been waiting for the arrival of humanitarian aid trucks.
The IDF has not yet responded to the reports.

Soldiers appear to clear mourning tent for Palestinian activist allegedly killed by settler
Israeli soldiers are seen on video forcing visitors to leave a mourning tent set up in memory of Awdah Hathaleen in his village of Umm al-Kheir, near the area where he was allegedly shot by a settler a day ago.
Footage shows soldiers instructing all non-residents of the village to leave due to the declaration of the area as a closed military zone.
The IDF has not yet issued a response. Video The army is known for calling non military and non problematic areas as closed military zones. They do it to prevent Palestinian protests, in this case against the killing of an activists, as well as to keep Israelis who support the Palestinian activists in peaceful demonstrations. The closures are strictly political yet when they do finally issue a response, it will be that the people coming to mourn the killed Palestinian will be provocateurs who will endanger the soldiers in the area, a typical IDF lie but one that follows their narrative and the narrative of the political echelon.
Eight residents of Umm al-Kheir arrested overnight after Palestinian activist shot dead in clash with settlers Monday
Eight residents of the Palestinian hamlet of Umm al-Kheir in the South Hebron Hills region were arrested overnight, following an incident on Monday in which activist Awdah Hathaleen was allegedly shot dead by Yinon Levi, a sanctioned, extremist settler who runs an illegal farming outpost in the region.
According to Peace Now, the head of the village was among those arrested.
Activists say that the army entered Umm al-Kheir around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning with two military jeeps to carry out the arrests.
The IDF says it is looking into the reports.
Hathaleen was killed during a confrontation between Levi and residents of Umm al-Kheir.
According to testimony from eyewitnesses reported by the Mekomit news website, Levi’s bulldozer entered the village and began uprooting trees and a fence, leading residents to throw stones at the vehicle.
Levi then exited the vehicle and fired off several shots from his sidearm, one of which struck Hathaleen in the chest, killing him.
A police representative said in a hearing in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, however, that “it appears” Levi’s life and that of a minor driving the vehicle had been in danger, although further investigative work was needed.
The judge said Levi’s claim of self-defense was backed by two “objective” eyewitnesses.
Levi was released to house arrest until Friday.
Four men arrested for throwing stones at Levi’s bulldozer on Monday remain in detention in the Ofer prison and will be brought to a military court on Thursday. link There is no such thing as justice for Palestinians in the West Bank. The settler terrorists keep attacking them, destroying their property, stealing their property and as we see here, kills them all with impunity and immunity. And just as I have said, in all instances of the Settler Terrorism, the settlers get away with everything, at worse they receive home arrest until that is removed as well. The Palestinians who are attacked and defending themselves get arrested and charged. They then are confined to jail/prison until the completion of their trial and then 99.9% of them are found guilty and sentenced to prison. This is the Israeli occupation that worsens by the day under this extremist government.

From the River to the Sea, on Two States We Agree!
Gershon Baskin
July 30, 2025
International recognition by individual countries of the State of Palestine is an important step and something that I have been calling for and supporting for many years. I have told Heads of State and Ambassadors from countries that claim to support the two-states solution but only recognize one of them, that they need to “put up or shut up”. We have had enough duplicity in the dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by countries that consider themselves friends of Israel and/or Palestine. If the two-states solution is back on the table, as it seems to be, and if it is the only solution to this conflict that enables the two peoples living on the Land between the River and the Sea (7 million Israeli Jews and 7 million Palestinian Arabs) to achieve a territorial expression of their identity, then recognition by all countries of the world of both the State of Israel and the State of Palestine is essential.
The upcoming (hopeful) recognition of the State of Palestine by France, the UK, Malta, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Portugal is very welcome. In reality, this will not change anything for the Palestinian people who will remain under Israeli occupation, but nonetheless it is very important. If 192 Member States of the United Nations recognize the State of Palestine, but Israel continues to refuse to recognize the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, the occupation will continue. Nonetheless, the recognition of the State of Palestine by those countries that consider themselves allies and supporters of Israel, of Israel’s right to defend itself, of Israel’s right to exist, sends a very important message to the people of Israel (probably not to the present government of Israel which is a disaster for the people of Israel). The message is that the two-states solution is alive and well and while these countries are recognizing the State of Palestine and the right of the people of Palestine to self-determination, it is also a reaffirmation of the two-states solution that grants the same legitimacy for the right of the Jewish people to self-determination in a democratic state (with full equality for all of its citizens) to live in peace with their Palestinian neighbors.
The recognition of the State of Palestine by these countries and others that will follow should also be clear in pointing out the damaging message (to the Palestinian people) of the slogan “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” because that slogan is against the two-states solution and negates the existence of Israel and the right of Israel to exist. This slogan is in fact an anti-Palestinian slogan because it enables the imagination of a reality in which Israel no longer exists and it is therefore, an anti-peace, anti-two-states solution slogan. There is no one state solution, even if it is offered as the utopian reality of a truly democratic state where Jews, Christians and Muslims live in peace and equality. The conflict between the two peoples living on the land in almost equal numbers has never been about creating the United States of Israel-Palestine. The two people living on the Land have been willing to fight, to die and to kill for more than 100 years for a territorial expression of their identity. They want a solution that recognizes both peoples’ claim that they give their identity to the Land and take their identity from it. Only the two-states solution enables both people the right of self-determination.
The reluctance of both peoples to accept the legitimacy of the claim for the recognition of their national rights and self-determination of the other side is understandable. However, it is time to get beyond that demand for legitimacy of national rights and to finally understand that both people are there, both people have an historical connection to the land, and both people intend to stay on the land as a national entity for a long time to come. This in itself would be a step in the right direction. After October 7 and every day since, the futility of continuing this conflict should be apparent to both peoples and to the entire world. The war in Gaza must be the last Israeli-Palestinian war and from it must emerge the two-states solution with the recognition of both states by the entire international community.
Along with recognition of the State of Palestine, it is time to adopt a new political slogan offered by the Alliance for Two States: From the River to the Sea, on Two States We Agree!
Netanyahu reportedly tells ministers Gaza facing ‘heavy decisions’ if Hamas doesn’t soften ceasefire demands soon
Military and political leaders are debating “heavy decisions” expected to be made in the coming days regarding the future of Israel’s strategy in Gaza, according to a report by Channel 12 news.
Citing unnamed Israeli officials, the report says that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told ministers in the government’s top-level inner cabinet at a meeting yesterday that “We are turning over every stone in order to reach a deal, but if Hamas doesn’t show flexibility in the coming days, we will make heavy decisions that will change the face of the war.”
The channel claims that Israeli officials have expressed frustration with what they see as insufficient US pressure on Qatar to compel Hamas to shift its position after talks appeared to collapse last week.
A diplomatic source tells the network that there had been a real opportunity to reach a truce agreement in recent weeks, but that Hamas’s stance was hardened by its launch of what the source called a “famine campaign,” accusing Israel of causing mass starvation in Gaza.
The source is quoted as blaming recent statements by France and the UK supporting recognition of a Palestinian state as dealing “a real blow” to those efforts, echoing talking points from Israeli diplomatic officials.
At the same meeting, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir reportedly cautioned political leaders that Israel’s current strategy in the war was prioritizing the destruction of Hamas over the return of the 50 hostages still in Gaza.
Zamir argued that conquering the entire Gaza Strip would take two to five years and said Israel should instead “continue the [current] approach of [targeted] raids,” according to Channel 12.
According to both Channel 12 and the Kan public broadcaster, Smotrich responded by accusing Zamir of failing to deliver on past commitments to defeat Hamas within three months.
“I apologize to the previous Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, and I miss him. You should bring Herzi here and apologize to him, because you attacked him for precisely similar things,” Smotrich reportedly said.
Smotrich had previously called for Halevi’s dismissal over the IDF’s failures during the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre.
The cabinet also reviewed a new set of military proposals, including dissecting the Gaza Strip into operational zones and surrounding key areas such as Gaza City and central refugee camps, Channel 12 adds. Another discussed proposal would see civilians relocated into designated humanitarian zones — including the Rafah area and parts of the coastline. Link
Opposition lawmakers hit out at Netanyahu after UK Palestine ultimatum
Opposition politicians are criticizing the government’s handling of the war and its fallout in response to the United Kingdom’s announcement that it will unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel commits to a ceasefire in Gaza and a long-term peace process.
“This government led us from the most justified war in the world to a diplomatic disaster,” Opposition Leader Yair Lapid writes in a Hebrew-language post on X. “One failure after another. A prime minister who has vanished from the diplomatic arena, a useless foreign minister, and ministers who endanger IDF soldiers every time they open their mouths.”
Yisrael Betyenu chairman Avigdor Liberman posts in Hebrew: “The person responsible for the October 7 disaster is also responsible for the diplomatic collapse that keeps growing,” apparently referencing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“More and more countries are considering recognizing the catastrophe known as a Palestinian state — including the UK, one of the key members of the United Nations Security Council,” he says.
Meanwhile, a senior Israeli official tells Ynet that French President Emmanuel Macron “broke the dam” by announcing that Paris would recognize a Palestinian state in September.
The official says the UK’s move “was expected in light of the tremendous political pressure placed on the British — this is a Labour government. It’s a harmful declaration that sends the wrong message to Hamas not to agree to a deal.”
- Hamas campaign and ‘hunting’ IDF soldiers: How Israel’s diplomatic fallout unfolded
A surge of violent antisemitic incidents across Europe coincides with growing diplomatic isolation for Israel, as the EU considers suspending its research funding and more nations move toward recognizing a Palestinian state
A French Jewish father and his kippah-wearing son stopped at an Italian highway gas station, only to be accosted by a mob shouting “Free Palestine” and “murderers.” The father stood firm, shouting back, “Am Yisrael Chai.”
Earlier, in a Vienna restaurant, Israeli musicians Amit Peled, Yulia Gurevich, and Hagai Shaham were asked what language they were speaking. Upon answering “Hebrew,” they were promptly expelled, with no one in the restaurant defending them. The day before, a Syrian migrant bit an Israeli tourist on an Athens beach, severing part of his ear.Two days earlier, two Israeli teens were brutally beaten in Rhodes and a Mano Maritime ship fled the island of Syros after 100 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered at the dock. At Belgium’s Tomorrowland festival, an antisemitic group linked to Hezbollah “hunted” two Israeli soldiers, accusing them of war crimes. These six severe antisemitic incidents in a single week underscore a stark reality: Israel is facing a diplomatic tsunami, a storm of hatred, isolation, condemnation and widespread boycotts. On Monday, pro-Palestinian protesters tried to block a ship carrying Israeli tourists from docking in Rhodes, while the European Commission debated a recommendation to partially suspend Israel’s access to the Horizon 2020 research funding program. This followed last week’s statements from several EU countries claiming Israel failed to meet its humanitarian obligations in Gaza, urging the Commission to propose concrete measures. Even Germany, a steadfast ally to Israel, supported the move. The proposal had been expected to be finalized on Tuesday, prompting Israel’s Foreign Ministry to warn: “As Israel battles jihadist terror, such decisions strengthen Hamas and harm ceasefire prospects. Israel will work to ensure the recommendation is not adopted by the EU foreign ministers’ council.” Horizon 2020, a multi-billion-euro EU framework for research and development, has included Israel as a key partner since the 1990s. A senior Israeli official called potential suspension “a disaster for Israeli science and our image,” warning of a “slippery slope.” Weeks ago, Israel thwarted an EU initiative to suspend trade agreements over alleged human rights violations, but that was before Hamas’ campaign to draw attention to starvation in the coastal strip gained traction, and success this time is uncertain. Fears are also growing of moves to ban Israel from FIFA, international sports and even the Eurovision Song Contest, potentially placing it alongside Russia, barred from prestigious competitions. Investment in Israel is declining, while academic and cultural boycotts are rising. Criticism of Israel’s alleged “starvation policy” in Gaza spans both sides of the U.S. political spectrum. Diplomatic isolation is intensifying, both in international institutions and bilateral relations. The U.S. has rebuked Israel for unchecked Jewish settler violence in the West Bank. Democrats, alienated for years, see figures like Zohran Mamdani, a progressive, Israel-critical candidate for New York City mayor, reflecting animosity toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, even among American Jews. Republicans, including Israel’s staunchest allies, also voice concerns over the humanitarian situation. In Europe, momentum for recognizing a Palestinian state is growing, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, who is pressing the UK and Canada to follow. Israel hopes U.S. support will block the move, but success is uncertain. On Monday, reports emerged that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to propose ending the Gaza war, including recognizing a Palestinian state. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, Portugal and Malta may join France, reflecting both the rising influence of Muslim populations in Europe and frustration over the lack of a political horizon. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof assured President Isaac Herzog he would oppose trade sanctions, yet posted support for them on Monday, sparking an unprecedented clash with Herzog, who criticized a leader of a historically friendly nation. Israel needs a ceasefire not only to free hostages and ease the burden on IDF soldiers but also to alleviate the international pressure crushing it and Jewish communities worldwide, who bear the cost of global anti-Israel sentiment. Yet Hamas’ impossible demands cast doubt on its desire for a deal. Israel may lack the luxury of continuing the status quo. Without change, its diplomatic standing will worsen. The humanitarian crisis is Israel’s Achilles’ heel and hopes that the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation would weaken Hamas have crumbled. Israel believed denying Hamas aid and distributing it through the fund would force capitulation but Hamas’ starvation campaign, amplified by fabricated images or photos of sick children unrelated to hunger, has resonated globally. Israel’s repeated failures in public diplomacy have left it both defeated and ostracized. link There is "no alternative" to a two-state solution between Israelis and the Palestinians, France told a UN conference co-chaired with Saudi Arabia. Days before the conference, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would formally recognize a State of Palestine in September. Starmer and Abbas speak by phone after Israel ultimatum announcement
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spoke by phone with UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer, the official PA news agency Wafa reports.
During the call, Starmer informed Abbas of the UK’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza and other steps. He also invited Abbas to London for talks, according to Wafa.
In a separate statement carried by Wafa, Abbas praises Starmer for the move and calls on the UK to “officially recognize the State of Palestine immediately
Trump says Palestine recognition ‘rewarding Hamas,’ didn’t discuss issue with Starmer
Trump has absolutely no understanding of the region,Or what the 2 State Solution is really about, Why it is the only way to end the conflict (even though he pushed for this in his first term), why it is exactly the opposite of awarding Hamas, and how Netanyahu’s preventing discussion actually brought us to October 7. He is still only listening to Netanyahu’s BS and buys into it blindly.US envoy Huckabee says French announcement on Palestine dinged Israeli talks with PA
No one should be surprised that Huckabee would say things like this. He, too, has no understanding of the situation beyond his blind fundamentalist ideology of following and accepting everything coming out of Netanyahu’s mouth- Netherlands bars entry to Smotrich, Ben Gvir over statements on Gaza and West Bank
Announcement is the latest sign of escalating tensions between Israel and the European Union; several other countries have banned the two far-right ministersThe Netherlands has banned far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir from entering the country, the latest Western nation to bar the pair over their rhetoric on Gaza and the West Bank.
Monday’s decision came as part of a raft of measures to pressure Israel over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Dutch media reported. The Dutch government will also summon Israel’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Modi Ephraim, to denounce the “unbearable and indefensible” situation in the enclave.
In a letter to Dutch lawmakers quoted by local newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, the Netherlands’ Foreign Minister Caspar Valdekamp said the move against Smotrich and Ben Gvir came “because they have repeatedly incited violence by settlers against the Palestinian population and… called for ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip.”
The announcement is the latest sign of escalating tensions between Israel and the European Union, as well as the Netherlands specifically, as global concern over reports of starvation in Gaza remains high. On Monday, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and President Isaac Herzog disagreed publicly on social media over how to address the situation.
Two weeks ago, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar held meetings with EU officials to stave off sanctions on Israel in exchange for an increase in aid entering Gaza. But more recently, EU leaders have complained that Israel has not done enough, and are considering suspending Israel from a signature EU research funding program, a step Schoof said may be among “additional measures” his government could support.
On Tuesday, Sa’ar summoned Marriet Schuurman, the Dutch ambassador to Israel, for a reprimand at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem over the steps the Netherlands is pursuing regarding Israel.
“The conversation will take place in light of the Dutch government’s decisions to take measures against Israel, including against its right to self-defense and against ministers in its government,” Sa’ar’s office said.
The Netherlands is the second EU country to bar Smotrich and Ben Gvir, after Slovenia announced its own ban earlier in July. The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Norway also banned the ministers last month. Separately, several EU countries, including the Netherlands, have weighed arresting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in compliance with an International Criminal Court arrest warrant.Responding to the announcement, Smotrich and Ben Gvir both accused the Dutch government of siding with extremist forces and alluded to Europe’s history of antisemitism.
“Even if I’m banned from all of Europe, I’ll keep working for our country and demanding that we topple Hamas and back our fighters,” Ben Gvir posted on X. “In a place where terrorism is tolerated and terrorists are welcome, a Jewish minister from Israel is unwelcome. Terrorists are free and Jews are boycotted.”
Smotrich accused the Netherlands’ government of surrendering “to the lies of radical Islam.” He wrote regarding Europe that “Jews will not be able to live there in security in the future either,” just as they were not able to in the past.
“What they don’t understand in the Netherlands and other European countries is that, far more than it matters to me to enter the Netherlands, it matters to me that my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and those of all the Jews in the world, can live in the State of Israel in security for decades and centuries to come,” Smotrich posted on X.
Ben Gvir, who chairs the Otzma Yehudit party, and Smotrich, who chairs Religious Zionism, have drawn strong international criticism for their hardline stances on the Gaza war, as well as their comments on, and policies in, the West Bank.
The two have suggested that Israel should block all humanitarian aid into Gaza as long as the Hamas terror group still holds Israeli hostages, though both have remained in Netanyahu’s coalition after the prime minister announced a series of measures to increase the flow of aid to Gaza this week. Both have endorsed a return to Israeli settlement in the Strip at the conclusion of the war.
In the West Bank, Ben Gvir, who oversees the police, has declined to arrest violent settlers despite frequent attacks on Palestinians, and Smotrich — who wields ministerial powers over the West Bank from within the Defense Ministry — has worked to expand settlements and advocate for annexation of parts of the territory.
The ban on Smotrich and Ben Gvir came after Schoof threatened to support sanctions on Israel if Gazans do not get greater access to aid, a message he said he conveyed to Herzog in a phone call.
“If the EU decides tomorrow that Israel is not in compliance with the relevant agreements on this, the Netherlands supports the plan to suspend Israeli participation in the EU research programme Horizon,” Schoof posted on X. “If that proves to be the case, tomorrow in Brussels the Netherlands will also press for further European measures, for example in the realm of trade.”
Herzog criticized Schoof’s proposals and said that his post did not “reflect the spirit and details of the call.” He also criticized Schoof’s failure to mention the 50 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
“Nor does it reflect my crystal clear position that it will be a HUGE mistake if EU takes such steps especially in light of Israel’s ongoing and upgraded humanitarian efforts,” Herzog posted. “I am especially saddened that the plight of our hostages and the demand for their immediate release are not even mentioned!” link These two extremist ministers are very worthy of these sanctions and it should be across the board of the entire European Community and beyond. The two are the biggest promoters of violence and genocide against the Palestinians. Both their statements and actions for years have been to promote the expulsion of Palestinians from the occupied territories so that all of their land can be stolen and only Jews be allowed to live in the territories. Throughout the war, their statements and demands for actions have only gotten worse and they want all Palestinians in Gaza to be so miserable that they will be begging to leave under 'voluntary emigration'. Smotrich in his position of Finance Minister has held back hundreds of millions of shekels from the Palestinian Authority with a goal of eliminating the PA altogether despite the fact that there is deep and needed security cooperation between the security forces of Israel and the PA which have prevented thousands of terror attacks. Smotrich doesn't want or agree to any semblance of a government to represent the Palestinians. In his position of a minister in the Defense Ministry, he has all the responsibility for civilian affairs in the West Bank which includes Jewish settlements and their expansions all at the expense of the Palestinians in the West Bank. He distributes huge budgets for the settlements and the many illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian lands and the purchase of equipment, vehicles and weapons that are deliberately use to terrorize the Palestinians, all with the goal to make the Palestinians lives so miserable they, too will want to leave.
Ben Gvir, who spent his entire legal career before entering politics represented Jewish terrorists all accused of crimes against Palestinians, of which he doesn't consider them crimes at all. He is a convicted criminal for his support of and belonging to a racist terrorist organization that was outlawed by the Knesset. He wasn't allowed to join the army because of his racism and support for Jewish terrorism. And in the last 2 years plus, he has been the Minister in charge of the police of which he has turned into his private militia doing what he wants them to do with regard to Palestinians and protestors for the hostages and against the government. He has given strict instructions to the police not to show up at incidents of Jewish terror against Palestinians, and if they are there, not to get involved, not to arrest the settler terrorists, not to charge them and certainly not to bring them to trial. If they are present, they are only there to arrest Palestinians who are the victims. He supports all violence inflicted upon Palestinians and wants all of them to leave the West Bank and Gaza. He has proposed countless times to expel as many Palestinians as possible and has supported any Jewish terrorist accused of killing Palestinians. The two of them are genuine criminals who should be arrested and put on trial in Israel but under this failed government, will never happen. Therefore, it is up to the governments of the world to do what Israel refuses to do, starting with sanctions. I highly expect the ICC to bring international charges against them and many others for crimes against humanity during this horrid war, and those charges will be very deserved. - US public approval of Israeli offensive in Gaza at lowest point of war — poll
Declining support reflects growing partisan divide on Israel, with GOP still mostly backing fight against Hamas; over half of American adults disprove of Netanyahu, an all-time highSupport for Israel’s military action in Gaza has declined substantially among US adults since the war with Hamas began, with a new low of only about one-third now approving, according to a Gallup poll released Tuesday.
The new poll also found that about half of American adults now have an unfavorable view of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the most negative rating he has received since he was first included in Gallup polling in 1997, during his first stint as premier.
The findings underscore the Israeli government’s dramatic loss of support within the United States. But not everyone is shifting, with the war instead becoming more politically polarizing.
The rising disapproval is driven by Democrats and independents, who are much less likely to approve of Israel’s actions than they were in November 2023, just after Israel began its ground offensive in Gaza following the devastating Hamas-led attack of October 7.
Republicans, on the other hand, remain largely supportive of both Israel’s military actions and Netanyahu.
The poll was conducted on July 7-21, while reports of starvation in Gaza led to international criticism of Israel’s decision to restrict food aid, though before US President Donald Trump expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian situation.
The new poll found that about 6 in 10 US adults disapprove of the military action Israel has taken in Gaza, up from 45% in November 2023. At that time, 50% said they approved.
The 32% approval figure in the latest poll marked the lowest level of support for Israel’s offensive since the question was first asked by Gallup in November 2023, with support among Americans dwindling as the war has continued. In March 2024, about half of US adults disapproved of Israel’s military action in Gaza, which fell slightly as the year wore on.
In a new low, only 8% of Democrats and one-quarter of independents say they now approve of Israel’s military campaign, down from 36% and 47%, respectively, in November 2023. By contrast, 71% of Republicans approve, a number that has stayed relatively stable throughout the war.
Some of the decline among Democrats and independents may be attributed to the change in administration. While former US president Joe Biden faced significant pushback from fellow Democrats on his handling of the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, they may be even more frustrated by the approach of Trump, a Republican who is generally considered to be aligned with Netanyahu.
Young adults are also much more likely to disapprove of Israel’s actions. Only about 1 in 10 adults under age 35 say they approve of Israel’s military choices in Gaza, compared with about half of those who are 55 or older.
Democrats and young people also widely disapproved of Israel’s attack on Iran’s nuclear program last month, the poll found. Just 12% of Democrats and 31% of independents said they approved of Israeli military actions in Iran, compared to 78% of Republicans. And 15% of those ages 18 to 34 approved, compared to 55% of those 55 and older.

Gallup senior editor Megan Brenan said the latest figures reflect an enduring partisan divide. Even as Democrats grow increasingly unhappy with Israel’s military campaign, Republicans remain supportive.
“We’ve seen this drop in approval since last fall, and it’s really driven by Democrats and independents,” Brenan said. “Republicans are still willing to be in this for the time being.”
Previous Gallup polling has shown a yawning partisan gap on Israel. A February poll found that just 33% of Democrats have a favorable view of Israel compared to 83% of Republicans.
Views of Netanyahu have also grown less favorable over the past few years, with more viewing him negatively than positively in measurements taken since the war in Gaza began.
About half of US adults, 52%, now have an unfavorable view of Netanyahu in the new poll, which overlapped with Netanyahu’s recent visit to the US. Just 29% view him positively, and about 2 in 10 either haven’t heard of him or don’t have an opinion.
That’s a change — although not a huge one — since December 2023, when 47% of US adults had an unfavorable view of Netanyahu and 33% had a favorable opinion. But it’s a reversal from as recently as April 2019, when more US adults viewed him positively than negatively.
Republicans have a much more positive view of Netanyahu than Democrats and independents do. About two-thirds of Republicans view him favorably, which is in line with last year. About 1 in 10 Democrats and 2 in 10 independents feel the same way.
“This is the first time we’ve seen a majority of Americans with an unfavorable view of him,” Brenan said. “All of these questions in this poll show us basically the same story, and it’s not a good one for the Israeli government right now.”
In addition, more than half of US adults, 55%, disapprove of Trump’s handling of the situation in the Middle East, according to a July AP-NORC poll.
But the conflict has not weighed as heavily on Trump as it did on Biden, who watched Democrats splinter on the issue. That’s because of Trump’s solid support from his base on this issue, reflected in Republicans’ continued approval of Israel’s military action.
About 8 in 10 Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of the situation in the Middle East. By contrast, only about 4 in 10 Democrats approved of Biden’s handling of the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians last summer, shortly before he dropped out of the US presidential race.
In an AP-NORC poll from March, Republicans were significantly more likely than Democrats and independents to say they sympathized more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians in the conflict.
And while Americans overall were more likely to say it was “extremely” or “very” important for the United States to provide humanitarian relief to Palestinians in Gaza than to say the same about providing aid to Israel’s military, Republicans said the opposite — more saw military aid to Israel as a higher priority than providing humanitarian relief to the Palestinians in Gaza. link. Netanyahu has single handedly taken Israel from a country that had one of the most barbaric attacks against it gaining sympathy around the world to one of the most hated nations in the world. He is the person most responsible for so much that has happened before October 7 and since. His support of Hamas directly and indirectly (never forget that Smotrich, the extremist finance minister said on more than one occasion that Hamas is an asset to Israel), the devastation of Gaza under his direct orders, the humanitarian crisis followed by widespread starvation, all through his direct actions and order. These are just some of the things that he has done to bring us to the lowest point we have ever been in our history and in the eyes of the international community. He has long been the most dangerous person in Israel and now he is the most reviled Israeli around the room, but it doesn't stop there. The world doesn't distinguish between the acts of a leader from the rest of the population. We are seeing Israelis and Jews attacked around the world. Netanyahu will continue with his mantra that it is all antisemitism and blames the various countries that don't stand up enough to antisemitism. But mostly it is him and all the attacks are against what we are doing in Gaza and are against us, Israelis and the government. Like always, we are paying the price for Netanyahu's crimes which were done in our name whether we agree or not.
