Hostage Updates

  • Revealed: Resignation at the Top of the Hostage Negotiation Team

A senior member of the negotiation team for the hostage release deal unexpectedly announced his departure today (Monday). This was reported on the evening news on Kan 11. According to assessments, Brigadier General Oren, who served as the deputy to Major General (res.) Nitzan Alon and was deeply involved in formulating the current plan, resigned due to the stalled state of the negotiations. An update on this matter was conveyed to the political leadership in the past 24 hours.

IDF Spokesperson's response: "Brig. Gen. Oren Seter returned from retirement leave to full service in the negotiation team starting October 7, tirelessly working to advance efforts to bring back the hostages. The officer will continue to assist the Hostage Headquarters as needed in the future."

The Israeli delegation departed Israel for Qatar yesterday without Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar and Maj. Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon, who is responsible for the hostage issue on behalf of the IDF. The delegation traveled to advance an Egyptian initiative to release a few hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire. Hamas sources informed a Saudi channel of a one-stage deal proposal.

The Israeli delegation, led by Mossad Chief Dedi Barnea, traveled to promote the Egyptian initiative for the release of a few hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire, intended as an initial deal toward releasing more hostages. Egyptian President al-Sisi stated that, under the Egyptian proposal, negotiations would take place over ten days to reach a permanent ceasefire. link

  • Who is Holding the Israeli Hostages in the Gaza Strip?
An Israeli security delegation led by Mossad Chief David Barnea was in Doha today, Qatar's capital, to renew talks on a hostage exchange deal with Hamas.
Israel views the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as an opportunity to resume negotiations on the hostage deal that has stalled since August.
According to Israel’s security assessment, multiple entities are holding the Israeli hostages in Gaza. Most are held by Hamas, some by the Islamic Jihad organization, and others by smaller terrorist groups, clans, or criminal families in the Gaza Strip.
The Bibas family was kidnapped from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz by two terror organizations. The father, Yarden, was kidnapped by Hamas operatives, while the mother, Shiri, along with her children, Ariel and Kfir, were taken by the Palestinian "Al-Mujahedeen" movement.
On October 20, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that at this stage, it is difficult to determine who holds the remaining hostages in Gaza.
Sources in Gaza close to Hamas claim that during parts of the war, Sinwar and several other senior figures in Hamas’s military wing surrounded themselves with a small group of Israeli hostages as human shields to ultimately secure a prisoner exchange deal with Israel.
However, after Israel killed Ahmad Ghandour, the northern commander of Hamas, and Ayman Nofal, the central commander, along with several hostages in tunnels, it was decided that the Israeli hostages would be dispersed and assigned to field commanders of lower rank than battalion commanders. Most of them were in fact under the command of platoon or squad leaders in Hamas’s military wing.
The hostages considered more "important" by Hamas are reportedly held by Muhammad Sinwar, Yahya Sinwar’s brother, who likely inherited his brother's role overseeing Gaza. Currently, no one in Israel’s security establishment knows whether he is willing to pursue a hostage deal or if, like his brother, he’s waiting for a broader regional conflict in the Middle East.
Muhammad Sinwar’s relationship with Hamas’s external leadership is also unclear. Does he follow their authority and is willing to strike a deal with Israel, or does he seek revenge for Yahya Sinwar’s assassination and intends to prolong Israel’s stress?
    **Who is Muhammad Sinwar?**
Until Yahya Sinwar's assassination, Muhammad Sinwar served as the head of Hamas’s military wing, taking over from Muhammad Deif after Israel assassinated him on July 13, 2024. Previously, he was responsible for the personal security of his brother, Yahya, and managed Gaza’s vast tunnel system, spanning hundreds of kilometers, which he developed with Muhammad Deif.
Muhammad Sinwar was born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in 1975. He is a member of the military council of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and formerly commanded the Khan Yunis Brigade.
He orchestrated the kidnapping of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit on June 25, 2006, from an IDF post near Rafah, and is also believed to be one of the masterminds behind the October 7 massacre in Israeli communities near Gaza, alongside his brother Yahya Sinwar and Muhammad Deif.
Sinwar has lived underground for many years and was nicknamed “the living dead” after Hamas falsely announced his death in 2014 to mislead Israeli intelligence. Many in Gaza argue he was more influential in the military wing than his brother Yahya and was the one who led indirect negotiations with Israel on the 2011 "Shalit deal," which secured the release of his brother Yahya.
According to Hamas sources, Muhammad Sinwar survived six assassination attempts. In April 2003, he survived a bomb blast outside his home in Khan Yunis, and the last failed attempt to assassinate him was during Operation "Guardian of the Walls" in May 2021.
In November 2023, Israeli forces raided Muhammad Sinwar's office in Gaza City and seized intelligence materials.
Hamas officials claim that when Yahya Sinwar was released from Israeli prison in 2011 as part of the "Shalit deal," senior figures in the military wing and among security prisoners in Israeli prisons complained that Muhammad had been involved in acts of pedophilia and sexual harassment of Hamas activists and Gazan youths. Israeli security sources say Yahya Sinwar used his high status in Hamas’s military wing to cover up his brother's actions and prevented an internal investigation.
Some Hamas members were reportedly excluded from the list of those freed in the Shalit deal, allegedly due to Muhammad's desire to keep them in prison to prevent exposure of his sexual abuse cases.
According to Israeli intelligence sources, Shin Bet learned of some of these allegations against Muhammad Sinwar from Hezbollah operative Samir Kuntar, who told interrogators that Yahya Sinwar banned investigations into cases of sexual abuse in prison to avoid exposing his brother Muhammad's involvement.
Samir Kuntar, who participated in the murder of the Haran family and police officer Eliyahu Shahar in Nahariya in 1979, was assassinated by Israel in Syria in 2015 using Air Force jets.

**What’s Next? Who is the Address for Negotiations?**
Following Sinwar’s assassination, Israel’s security establishment has considered various ideas to advance a hostage deal, assuming Yahya Sinwar was the primary obstacle to the negotiations.
New suggestions include offering amnesty and immunity to any terrorist who discloses the hostages' whereabouts, as well as the option for them to leave Gaza peacefully with a large sum of money.
The security establishment is also exploring the possibility of negotiating separately with some of the groups holding hostages, including Islamic Jihad, the Al-Mujahedeen movement, or the local clans in Gaza.
Hamas’s leadership abroad announced after learning of Yahya Sinwar's death that they oppose a "small deal" and adhere to the principles set by Yahya Sinwar before his death: a complete cessation of hostilities, full IDF withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons.
The primary question before resuming negotiations is identifying the proper entity to negotiate with and determining whether it truly controls the hostages and can release them if a deal is reached. Mossad Chief David Barnea is expected to gain answers to these questions once negotiations resume in Doha tomorrow.  link Many had the assumption that Yihya Sinwar was the primary obstacle to a deal. Others say it to take the focus off the real primary obstacle to a deal, Binyamin Netanyahu. It is true that Sinwar had major demands that were hard to swallow but they were doable as per all of the heads of the security establishment. The only one who said they were not doable was always Netanyahu and when that wasn't enough, he kept putting in new demands that were never agreed upon in the War Cabinet or with the negotiations team. These demands were not strategic or even tactical; they were always meant to prevent any deal that meant the war would end would never come to fruition. Yesterday, it was announced that a senior member of the negotiating team resigned because of his frustration that they could not reach a deal (and everyone knows it was because Netanyahu would not allow them to reach a deal).

A top Hamas official appears to indicate that the Gazan terror group is open to a deal with Israel as talks aimed at ending the war and freeing hostages restart in Doha.

Husam Badran, a senior member of Hamas’s Qatar-based political bureau, says in a statement carried by the Pro-Hamas Shehab news agency that an agreement is possible.

“Our demands are clear and known, and a deal can be reached, provided that Netanyahu remains committed to what was already agreed upon,” Badran says. It is unclear if Badran’s comments are in reaction to an Egyptian proposal for a two-day ceasefire in Gaza to exchange four Israeli hostages for some Palestinian prisoners, followed by 10 days of talks.

Saudi news station Al Arabiya reported earlier that Hamas was willing to accept the Egyptian proposal as long as it is incorporated into its July 2 demands for a hostage deal. It also seeks guarantees that Israel will commit to the Egyptian proposal being part of a comprehensive deal.

Hamas sources also told Saudi channel Asharq News that the group preferred a comprehensive deal rather than a piecemeal one. Link As I have said, Hamas is ready for a deal but any deal with them means ending the war  they have agreed to my brother’s 3’week plan but that doesn’t appear to be the plan that anyone is presenting. Perhaps Hamas will, but that plan also calls for an end of the war. It also has Hamas’ agreement to allow another non aligned Palestinian government of technocrats to rule Gaza and their last and most surprising acquiescence was to hand over their weipns to this new governing body. It has been the first time that they have agree to relinquish their military role in Gaza.  All of this would mean a major win for all of Betanyahu’s ‘declared’ goals for the war: ending Hamas rule in Gaza, getting the hostages home, eliminating the military terrorist threat from Gaza  it is a win-win-win solution. However, Netanyahu has no intentions of ending the war and he keeps saying it at every opportunity. He has no compunction for this war to be Ian ongoing war of attrition and doesn’t care about the costs:’the hostages lives, the soldiers fighting and dying,’the economic damage and the international damage

  • CIA Director Bill Burns floated a deal for a 28-day Gaza ceasefire, the freeing of around eight hostages by Hamas and the release of dozens of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, Axios reports citing three Israeli officials.

Burns discussed the idea during a meeting on Sunday with Israeli and Qatari counterparts, Axios says, adding that Hamas would free “roughly 8 women of all ages or men over the age of 50” as part of the deal.

“Israel agrees to a temporary pause, but Hamas wants a pause that would open a process that would lead to irreversible Israeli steps. If neither sides softens its position there isn’t going to be a deal,” a senior Israeli official tells the news site. link This is silly, actually stupid. Hamas will only agree to a deal that ends with the end of the war. They could possibly agree to a 'limited' deal like this if it also was guaranteed that the war would end in 'x' time. But this is really stupid because a limited deal is the last thing that should be discussed now. After 389 days that 101 hostages are languishing and dying in Hamas captivity, the only deal that should be on the table is a single phase deal to get all of them home and to end this miserable war where we have soldiers dying every day and more and more Palestinian civilians (women and children) are being killed every day. Enough!!!!

  • There will be another round of hostage talks this week, this time in Egypt, an Israeli official tells The Times of Israel. The Israeli delegation will likely be led by Mossad chief David Barnea, says the official.

US special envoy Amos Hochstein will be in Israel next week to continue pushing for a negotiated end to fighting in Lebanon, says the official. Hochstein will meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials.

“Israel is looking for long-lasting diplomatic assurances” in order to end the fighting against Hezbollah, says the official.

Gaza

  •  At least 60 Palestinians were killed, with 17 others missing under the rubble, after an Israeli strike on a residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya, Marwan Al-Hams of Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry official tells a press conference.

There is no immediate comment from Israel.

The Israeli military says it is aware of claims that nearly 100 people were killed in an overnight airstrike in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya, but stresses that the number provided by Hamas authorities may be inaccurate.

In response to a query, the IDF says it is aware of the reports but the incident is still under investigation.

“The IDF calls on the media to be careful with information published by Hamas, as has been proven in several previous events,” the military says.

The Hamas-run Civil Defense agency claimed earlier today that the overnight strike killed 93 people in a residential building in Beit Lahiya.

The IDF says that it “acts in a targeted manner and makes efforts to avoid harming uninvolved [civilians.]”

The Beit Lahiya area had been given an evacuation order earlier this month, as the IDF launched a new offensive in northern Gaza.

“We emphasize again that this is an active combat zone,” the IDF adds.

Northern Israel - Lebanon/Hizbollah/Syria

  • The Chief of Staff's message to the world from a Hezbollah tunnel: "For anyone who doubted - this is where they planned to invade."

Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi recently toured an underground Hezbollah compound in southern Lebanon with the Northern Command Commander and the Commander of the 98th Division. The site was destroyed over the weekend by IDF forces. Halevi stated in the complex, "There is a very advanced tunnel system here - bathrooms, kitchens, showers, numerous weapons storage rooms, and a lounge that can hold an entire platoon. It's a place where you can live and resupply, from which to launch raids eastward towards Israel. We have been saying for years that Hezbollah is preparing the border area for war."

He added: "To the countries around the world that doubted this, to the UN, and to UNIFIL forces who were positioned here above ground - these are critical pieces of evidence to understand why we are doing what we are doing, both above and below ground, and why it's essential to ensure these things do not return here. We caught this in time before it was too late, and we must prevent these infrastructures from reestablishing here."

  • Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported Monday that 38 people were killed and 124 wounded over the past 24 hours, bringing the toll from a year of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel to 2,710 killed.

The figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants, but say that of the dead, 532 are women and and 157 are children.

The IDF estimates that more than 2,000 Hezbollah operatives have been killed in the conflict. Around 100 members of other terror groups have also been reported killed in Lebanon.

Hezbollah has named 516 members who have been killed by Israel during the fighting, mostly in Lebanon, but some also in Syria. These numbers have not been consistently updated since Israel began a new offensive against Hezbollah in September.

Israel aims to stop the rocket fire from Lebanon that began on October 8, 2023, and allow tens of thousands of Israelis to return to their homes in northern Israel.

  • Lebanon’s health ministry says at least 60 people were killed on Monday in Israeli raids on several areas in the eastern Bekaa Valley, most of them in the Baalbek region.

The health ministry says the tolls cover 12 areas in the Bekaa Valley where terrorist group Hezbollah holds sway. At least two children are among the dead, it says.

At least 58 others were wounded, the health ministry adds, noting that the toll is preliminary as rescue efforts are still underway.

Of the 60 killed, at least 16 deaths were recorded in Al-Alaq, west of Baalbek city, according to the health ministry.

  • The IDF says it hit over 150 terror targets in Lebanon and Gaza over the past day.

It says dozens of gunmen were killed by security forces in both theaters of operations, and large amounts of weaponry were destroyed.

In Lebanon, the army says forces captured Hezbollah military facilities and destroyed rocket launchers and weapons caches.

In Gaza, troops killed Hamas gunmen attempting to plant bombs near troops and eliminated several other cells who were a threat to the soldiers, the IDF says.

  • Hezbollah names deputy head Naim Qassem as successor to slain chief Hassan Nasrallah. Qassem, a longtime deputy to Nasrallah, has served as the terror group’s acting leader since Israel killed Nasrallah in a strike in Beirut last month.

  • The IDF says it demolished an underground Hezbollah command center and another bunker where explosives were stored during recent operations in southern Lebanon.

Reservists of the Carmeli Brigade located the command center, which the IDF says was built some eight meters underground.

The reservists also found the bunker, where the IDF says around half a ton of explosives was stored. The bunker was built several years ago under a village in southern Lebanon, the military adds. video of explosion

West Bank and Jerusalem and Terror attacks within Israel

  •     Police and the Shin Bet say they recently arrested an Umm al-Fahm resident on suspicion of planning a terror attack on behalf of ISIS.

According to an investigation, Abed al-Rahman Mahajna pledged allegiance to the terror organization and its leader multiple times in recent months and was involved in the rioting that took place amid unrest across the country in May 2021, during the Gaza operation Guardian of the Walls.

Police found in Mahajna’s possession documents detailing explosives preparation and a will expressing his desire to die as a martyr.

The Haifa District Attorney’s Office filed charges against him today.

“This case joins a series of arrests made against Israeli citizens who planned to carry out terrorist activities in Israel,” a senior Shin Bet source says. “The trend of Israeli citizens being involved in terrorism and espionage is extremely grave, and the defense establishment will act with a firm hand against those involved.”

Politics and the War (general news)

  • Lapid tells Netanyahu to 'take responsibility' for his failures, says no PM has weakened Israel more

Addressing lawmakers at the opening of the Knesset winter legislative session, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid launches into a full-throated attack on the government, arguing that “there has been no prime minister who weakened the State of Israel more than” Benjamin Netanyahu.

Railing against the coalition from the plenum rostrum, Lapid argues that while Israel has had successes in taking out Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, Netanyahu and his government need to pull back on their “hubris” and arrogant talk.

“If you want credit for the successes, take responsibility for the failures as well,” he says. “If you want credit for the death of Nasrallah, take responsibility for the death of [hostage] Carmel Gat. If you want credit for the death of Sinwar, take responsibility for those murdered in [Kibbutz] Nir Oz. If you want credit for the assassination of Haniyeh, take responsibility for Nova,” the music festival where hundreds were brutally killed on October 7.

“The one who led us to the greatest disaster in our history cannot claim to be the right man to get us out of it. You are not,” he tells Netanyahu.

“There is a prime minister who is only focused on himself, in front of a wounded and bleeding nation, inciting and then whining that others are inciting against him, portraying himself as a victim who is being attacked and then bragging that he is a ‘strong prime minister from the right,'” Lapid continues. “Mr. Netanyahu, there was no prime minister who weakened the State of Israel more than you.”

If Netanyahu were really a strong prime minister he would stand up to the ultra-Orthodox parties in his coalition and tell them while Israel is at war and soldiers are dying every day, there will be no “evasion law,” says Lapid — referring to a bill widely exempting Haredi yeshiva students from military service that is currently being debated in the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

“If you cared about the country, you would say to [Haredi party leaders] Goldknopf and Deri, ‘Your threats do not work on me; there is no contradiction between studying Torah and defending the homeland. It is over, now,'” Lapid goes on. “A truly Zionist government would not even think of passing the disgrace called ‘the evasion law.'”

“This government has been in office for two years, since the end of December 2022. Is there one positive change that this government is able to name? One good thing you did for the citizens of Israel?” he asks.

“Have more missiles ever hit Israel? Have more civilians and soldiers ever died in Israel? Have more residents ever been evacuated from their homes for a longer period of time? Did you ever think, in your worst nightmares, that hundreds of Israeli citizens would be abandoned to a terrorist organization, and die in the tunnels?”

Turning to members of Netanyahu’s cabinet, Lapid argues that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has ruined the economy. And he slams National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir for “gloating at the scenes of terrorist attacks instead of preventing them,” adding that the far-right politician is the “only person in the Israeli Knesset who was convicted of supporting terrorism.”

“The statistics don’t lie. Since he became the minister, there have been more attacks, more murders, more crime, more terrorism. A hundred in words, zero in deeds,” he declares.

Ben Gvir yells at Lapid and a heated exchange ensues between the two. Likud MK Tally Gotliv also begins screaming at Lapid and is ejected from the plenum chamber.

The exchange comes only minutes after President Herzog directed an impassioned plea for decorum and respect toward lawmakers, arguing that Israel’s enemies “have worked hard to inflame internal conflict” and that Iran and its proxies “place at the heart of their campaign against Israel the destruction of Israeli trust.” link Every word of Lapid's resonates the absolute truth.

  • Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says the question of draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox soldiers is not a political issue, but a security one.

Asked about the law that is being pushed through by the government he is a part of, Gallant says he is opposed to it.

“It is not a political issue. It is a security and moral issue,” he says.

“Since I opposed the first reading [of the bill,] the situation has worsened. We have more open fronts, more injured soldiers and to my sorrow more fallen soldiers,” Gallant says. “We need more soldiers, we need more fighters.”

  • A US official tells the Axios news site that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu falsely told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that opposition lawmakers were the ones responsible for advancing legislation aimed at significantly restricting UNRWA’s operations.

Blinken raised Washington’s concern over the legislation during his one-on-one meeting with Netanyahu in Jerusalem last week, the US official says.

Netanyahu retorted by blaming the opposition and told Blinken that he should raise the issue with its leader Yair Lapid.

While Lapid’s party voted in favor of the legislation, the bills were brought to a final vote earlier today by Netanyahu’s coalition.

Lawmakers from both blocs co-sponsored the bill. Link Netanyahu, the pathological liar can’t help himself.  Lying comes so naturally and it doesn’t matter to him that these things are easily checked. His history of lying to the Americans is so rich that he doesn’t think it matters. For historical reference, When James Baker was US Secretary of State, he barred Netanyahu from the State Department because of his constant lies. Netanyahu was then a senior Israeli official on foreign policy (Under Moshe Arens)

The US is “deeply troubled” by the legislation passed Monday by the Knesset targeting UNRWA, saying that it could force the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees to discontinue all of its operations in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, a State Department spokesperson tells The Times of Israel.

“Implementing the legislation risks catastrophe for the more than 3 million Palestinians who rely on UNRWA for essential services, including health care, and primary and secondary education,” the spokesperson says.

“The humanitarian response in Gaza relies on UNRWA facilities and expertise to operate. UNRWA remains indispensable to these operations. There is no entity that can replace UNRWA, especially during this crisis,” the statement continues.

“We urge the government of Israel to pause and further consider implementation of this legislation to ensure UNRWA can effectively carry out its mission and facilitate humanitarian assistance.”

“UNRWA has also long been an organization in need of reform. We support steps to strengthen UNRWA impartiality and neutrality, including to respond to allegations of ties to terrorism,” the US State Department spokesperson adds.

The Israeli security establishment and professional staff cautioned the political echelon against passing legislation that massively hampers UNRWA from operating in Gaza in the middle of a war without a viable replacement in place, an Israeli official tells The Times of Israel.

While some Israeli political leaders recognized the humanitarian risk and the international backlash that would result from the law passed by the Knesset earlier today, “the political cost of opposing the legislation became too significant to endure,” the official says, explaining that the IDF itself has spent months building a campaign that ties UNRWA to Hamas. Link. This is another case of the government going against all the recommendations of the security establishment solely for political purposes and not caring about the impact it has on the war, the soldiers in the ground or the future.

  • The Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department says it has received some 12,000 soldiers since the beginning of the war on October 7, 2023, including those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

According to the Defense Ministry, some 5,200, or 43% of those received by the rehab centers amid the war are suffering from PTSD.

Some 14% are defined as having moderate to severe injuries, including 23 with severe head injuries, 60 amputees, and 12 who lost their eyesight.

Among the 12,000 soldiers, around 66% are reservists.

The ministry says that some 1,500 soldiers have been wounded twice in the war, meaning they returned to service after being treated by the rehab department and were wounded a second time.

The rehab department is also working with some 62,000 wounded veterans from previous wars. It forecasts that by 2030, the center will be treating some 100,000 people, at least half of them suffering from PTSD.

    The Region and the World
    • Gallant: Iran strikes were most significant Air Force operation since Six Day War, changed ‘balance of power’

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says Iran’s air defenses and missile production capabilities have been weakened by Israel’s strikes, calling it “a change in the balance of power.”

The remarks are made shortly after the IDF’s strikes on Iran late Friday, but only released by Gallant’s office now.

“The response seems very precise, high-quality, and deadly for what we wanted to hit and I think the IDF has not done an operation like this, the Air Force has not done an operation like this since Operation Focus,” Gallant says to top IAF officials and IDF chief of staff, referring to the opening strikes of the 1967 Six Day War.

“This is a proof of ability… A very accurate hit on the radars and the air defense systems, which actually creates a big disadvantage for the enemy when we want to attack later,” he says.

Gallant says that the strikes also damaged Iran’s missile production capabilities and now its stockpiles are limited until manufacturing can resume.

He says the damage to the air defenses and missile production caused “a change in the balance of power.”

“[Israel] remains with its power, [Iran] is weakened. Both in [our] attacking ability and in its defensive ability and in its production ability,” Gallant adds. link

    • **Thousands Protest Outside the Knesset as Winter Session Opens: "Returning to Judicial Overhaul While the Country Bleeds"**
Protesters call for the advancement of a hostage deal, equality in conscription burdens, and the establishment of a national inquiry into the events of October 7th: "We won’t let this government of neglect continue destroying the country." Thousands gathered this evening (Monday) to demonstrate in Agranat Square, opposite the Knesset, in protest of "the return to the judicial overhaul and the continued abandonment of the hostages." Throughout the day, various protest activities took place inside the Knesset and outside coalition members' homes, and following the main demonstration, a protest march is planned towards the Prime Minister’s residence on Gaza Street.
The signs in the first row (left to right) - Hostages, Soldiers, Displaced residents (refugees), Killed

The protest coincides with the opening of the Knesset’s winter session, with demonstrators calling for the immediate advancement of a deal to bring back 101 hostages held by Hamas, the repeal of the "exemption law" for conscription equality, a halt to the judicial overhaul, and the cessation of controversial legislation, as well as the establishment of a national inquiry into the failures of October 7th. Among the speakers are former Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. (res.) Dan Halutz, representatives of hostage families, and active reservists.

In his speech, former Chief of Staff Dan Halutz said: "There are 101 hostages held by Hamas. They must be returned home at all costs – all for all, now. This requires halting the fighting, which has run its course. This is a war without defined strategic goals. 'Total victory' is a campaign slogan and personal survival plan, not a state policy. The result is the 'total death' of the hostages. This war highlights the quality gap between the IDF's performance after the shock of October 7th and the government's and prime minister’s disgraceful conduct from then to now."

Earlier today, families of hostages entered Knesset committee rooms, announcing the establishment of a "Committee to Rescue the Hostages." According to them, over the past year, the government failed to conduct proper processes that could have facilitated numerous deals to bring back their loved ones. "We took over this room today because business as usual can’t go on," said Einav, mother of hostage Matan Tzangoker. "We’re announcing the establishment of a committee to rescue the hostages – there’s nothing more urgent or important."

Comedian and actress Adi Ashkenazi appeared at the Committee for the Advancement of the Status of Women, breaking down in tears during her speech: "The women of this country, we have no representation; we’re destined to cry and be raped. The few women who are in positions of power – do your job. How are we supposed to commit 100% to this country when it stands us up? Every mother in Israel isn’t sleeping at night."

"After October 7th, every injured female observer had her parents standing beside her, saying, 'They always told us an attack was coming, they could hear them training.' They were taken into the army, harmed, and then abandoned. Why did they enlist to protect the state if the state won’t protect them? They did their job faithfully, and then they were killed, raped, and run over."

**Legislation to be Advanced in the Winter Session**

      **Legislation Benefiting Haredim and Settlers:**
      - Legislation exempting yeshiva students from IDF enlistment.
      - A law to continue subsidizing daycare for yeshiva students who haven’t enlisted.
      - Amendment to the Negev and Galilee Development Authority law to allow Hebron Hills and Kiryat Arba residents to receive benefits under the law, likely at the expense of funding already allocated to communities covered by the law.

      **Legislation Weakening the Judiciary:**
      - Changing the appointment process of the Public Complaints Commissioner on Judges.
      - A bill to strip the Israel Bar Association of its authority to impose membership fees, transferring it to the Justice Minister, giving him economic leverage over the Bar Association, whose representatives sit on the Judicial Appointments Committee.

**Legislation Politicizing the Civil Service and Media:**
      - Government proposal to change the process of appointing the Civil Service Commissioner, granting the Prime Minister more freedom and reducing professional criteria.
      - Promoting the politicization of media oversight via a bill advanced by Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi.
      - A bill allowing the Communications Minister to determine mandatory rating measurement methods, which the Israel Democracy Institute warns may politicize and harm existing channels.

      **Legislation Threatening Freedom of Expression:**
      - Amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Law, allowing the police to initiate investigations for suspected incitement to terrorism without State Attorney approval. According to the Israel Democracy Institute, this threatens freedom of expression.
      - A bill expanding the grounds for disqualifying lists and candidates running for the Knesset, facilitating easier disqualification, especially of Arab candidates.
      - A bill enabling the revocation of funding from educational institutions where expressions of support for terrorism or terrorist organizations are found, a move that the Israel Democracy Institute warns harms freedom of expression and politicizes the education system.
      - A bill requiring higher education institutions to fire faculty members proven to have committed "incitement to terrorism" or "support for a terrorist organization," which the Israel Democracy Institute claims threatens freedom of expression and academic freedom.  link

      • Yemen’s Houthis say that they targeted three ships in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, attacks they called part of their efforts to enforce a naval blockade on Israel.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea says in a televised address that the vessels were targeted for attempting to approach ports bound for Israel.

According to the latest data from LSEG, all three targeted vessels were Liberia-registered.

One of the vessels, identified by the Houthis as Motaro, was last seen off Yemen’s western coast in the Red Sea, en route from Egypt’s Suez Canal to Shanghai, according to LSEG data.

Another vessel, the SC Montreal, was reportedly targeted in the Arabian Sea while travelling from Seychelles’ Port Victoria to Salalah, Oman.

The third vessel, the Maersk Kowloon, was tracked by LSEG in the western Indian Ocean, also en route from Salalah.

Earlier today, British maritime security firm Ambrey reported two explosions near a merchant vessel travelling 14 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s Al Dhubab.

Ambrey’s report followed initial statements from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency, which received information about three explosions related to an incident 25 nautical miles south of Yemen’s port of Mokha, but confirmed that the ship and crew were safe and had continued to their next port of call.

Yemen’s Houthis said they will continue these actions until Israel halts its offensive on Gaza and Lebanon. This poses significant risks to commercial shipping in the region, a critical route for global trade linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Taken captive: Ofer Calderon, initially escaped through window
Children Sahar Calderon, 16, and Erez Calderon, 12, were released on November 27

Ofer Calderon, 53, was taken captive on Saturday, October 7, with two of his children, when Hamas terrorists stormed Kibbutz Nir Oz, killing over 100 residents and some 15 foreign agricultural workers, and taking about 80 hostages.

Ofer Calderon, along with Erez and Sahar, two of his four children, initially escaped from their shelter through the window during the Hamas onslaught, into the fields of Kibbutz Nir Oz, where they were later taken hostage.

Sahar Calderon, 16, and Erez Calderon, 12, were released on November 27 as part of a temporary ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar and the United States between Hamas and Israel. Ofer Calderon remains a hostage in Gaza.

Hadas Calderon, Ofer’s ex-wife, was in the sealed room of her home on the kibbutz, holding the door handle against the terrorists. Their elder son, Rotem, 19, also survived in the safe room of his apartment, in the kibbutz area for young adults, while his older sister Gaya, 21, was in Tel Aviv.

Grandmother Carmela Dan was at her house down the street with Hadas Calderon’s niece, Noya Dan. Their bodies were found on October 19.

At a press conference held in the aftermath of the Hamas massacres in Israel’s south, Gaya Calderon wept, saying, “My dad brought me up, he’s my best friend, I have no one to talk to.”

Hadas Calderon stood in front of the Defense Ministry for days before her two children were released, and extended members of the family are continuing to rally for Ofer Calderon’s release.

Ofer marked his 53rd birthday in captivity in Gaza.

Released hostage Erez Calderon, 12, issues video plea for captive dad’s return
Youngster says he hopes clip will somehow reach father Ofer, who was also abducted on October 7 and has been held in Gaza ever since

Erez Calderon, a 12-year-old former Hamas hostage, made an emotional appeal Monday for the release of his father, who has been held captive in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

Calderon posted a video to Instagram, explaining he had made the clip in the hope that his father, Erez, may somehow get to see it. He said it was hard to talk to the camera but “if it reaches my father it is worth it.”

Ofer Calderon was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz with his son Erez and daughter Sahar on October 7, when the Hamas terror group led a devastating attack on Israel, butchering some 1,200 people. Erez’s grandmother Carmela Dan and his cousin Noya Dan were both murdered in the assault.

Sahar, 16, and Erez were released on November 27 as part of a temporary ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar and the United States between Hamas and Israel.

Noting that in two months he is to celebrate his bar mitzvah, Calderon asked viewers, “How can I celebrate… when my father is in Gaza?”

“I have a clear goal in life — that he return,” he said.

His plea came days after Israeli soldiers found the bodies of six hostages in a Gaza tunnel. Autopsies showed that the captives were shot dead just a day or two before troops found them.

In the video, and an accompanying post, Calderon described the moments he was snatched and the horrific scenes of the terror attack.

Some moments of Calderon’s abduction were filmed by terrorists and shared on social media.

Recalling the events of October 7, which began with a massive barrage of thousands of rockets fired at Israel, Calderon said he and his family heard the shooting but thought that it was from Israeli soldiers.

“Then it all started,” he said.

When terrorists entered their home, the family initially sought refuge in their sealed bomb shelter. They were captured after they exited through a window and tried to run for safety.

Calderon said a terrorist grabbed him and took him to a motorcycle.

“I tried to look for my father, but all I saw were terrorists with weapons and bodies thrown on the floor,” he said.

The last time he saw his father, Calderon said, Ofer was on his knees and bleeding as terrorists rained blows on him.

“Imagine how I felt when I was separated from my father when he was all covered in blood from the blows the terrorists gave him. It’s a moment that never leaves me,” he said.

“Yesterday I heard that terrorists murdered six hostages. I can’t stop thinking I don’t want my dad to be next.”

Calderon said that while he was in captivity he heard his mother, who was not captured, speaking on the radio to appeal for the hostages’ release.

It was only once he was released from captivity that he found out his father was still a hostage. He said he hoped that, just as he was able to hear his mother, his father would see the video he made.

Dark Legacy - The Abandonment of October 7th Hostages

Netanyahu is a Threat to Israel's Security
    Amos Malka
    Major General (Res.).

About a year ago, in the midst of the protests against the attempted judicial coup, I cautioned people in every television studio, radio interview, opinion column in newspapers and dozens of speeches at demonstrations that Netanyahu, through his actions and omissions, had become a security threat to the State of Israel.
Recently, the Inquiry Commission of the Submarine Affair issued letters of caution to five senior officials. The letter of caution to the Prime Minister was of unprecedented severity and stated that Netanyahu "endangered national security and harmed the foreign relations and economic interests of the State of Israel."
October 7th, 2023, saw the worst security breach in the history of the State, under the leadership of Binyamin Netanyahu. The same Netanyahu who I cautioned months earlier posed a security risk. In retrospect, the Inquiry Commission of the Submarine Affair found that he had endangered national security.
From October 7th until today, the risk has become even more dangerous in light of Netanyahu's conduct during the most challenging campaign in our history. From being the target of an attack by a murderous and cruel terrorist organization with unprecedented international support, we have become an isolated state, in conflict with the entire world, to the point that the International Criminal Court in The Hague has issued an indictment, together with arrest warrants, against the country’s leadership.
The thread that connects the dots of my warning in 2023; the findings of the Inquiry Commission of the Submarine Affair; the materialization of the risk on October 7th; and the escalation of risk to highest levels - this thread is that these are not errors in judgment, or a misreading or mis-assessment of the situation. Netanyahu is very capable in matters of security and foreign policy, and his reading and assessment of the situation are completely sober. The problem is that everything he is doing is with full awareness and all for one single goal: his survival in power in order to evade a sentence and verdict in his personal trial.
Netanyahu has "put himself into voluntary captivity" by the far right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. He refuses to hold a thorough and comprehensive strategic discussion; he refuses to define war goals for the northern and peripheral arenas; he refuses to pursue a hostage deal that could have been implemented five months ago, and he refuses to discuss the American-Saudi initiative.
    116 dark legacy

                    Netanyahu of yesteryear would have:
    - Reached a full hostage deal before carrying out a ground campaign
    - Conducted an intense offensive operation without the pressure
of the hostages and for a limited period
    - Introduced a civilian control mechanism to replace Hamas
    in the Gaza Strip
    - Adopted the American-Saudi plan
    - Backed the IDF and the security forces rather than
    attacking them day and night
    - Resolved the Lebanese front without subjecting
the north to nine long months of indignity
    - Taken responsibility
Had an election been held in June or July 2024, we would have seen the hostages released. The war in Gaza would have come to an end. The situation in Lebanon would have been resolved. The American initiative would have been adopted. Why? Because he would have come to the elections with achievements, and not with perpetuation of failure and the abandonment of the hostages, as is the case today.
