Hostage Updates
- This is what Netanyahu says and I say he is lying: Netanyahu in the Knesset plenum: "Efforts to return the hostages do not stop for a moment. Until 3 o'clock in the morning I sat together with my cabinet and discussed ways to overcome the refusal of Hamas to release all of the hostages. Hamas is the obstacle to the deal."I say: Hamas has long been ready to release all the hostages , but the price is a complete end to the war, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the release of Palestinian prisoners, a large increase in aid and Hamas is ready to hand over power in Gaza to a professional Palestinian government, not Hamas or Fatah. This deal has been on the table for months, but as the head of israeli negotiations says - Netanyahu does not want to end the war. (Gershon Baskin, 11-18-2024)
Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar traveled to Turkey — where an Arab official told The Times of Israel senior Hamas figures are now being hosted — over the weekend for talks with his counterpart Ibrahim Kalin, the Walla news site reports.
Citing sources involved in the matter, the report says the pair discussed efforts to restart the Gaza ceasefire-hostage talks and the possibility of Turkish assistance. link It has been reported that there is a feeling among some of the security heads that there may be an opportunity to secure the release of some hostages with a partial deal that doesn't call for the end of the war. They believe that the position of Hamas is severely weakened and with the talks in Lebanon to end that conflict and disconnect it from Gaza (as opposed to Nasrallah's terms when he was alive) further weakens Hamas' position, that they may accept a partial deal that will include a ceasefire for a specified period of time and other concessions. Personally, I believe this to be wishful thinking and it also gives Netanyahu a new spin to sell (I don't believe this is the security establishment's purpose, though). Even if it is a slight possibility, it is doing a selection process and saying that the rest of the hostages, the men and soldiers will be left to die. The only deal that should be discussed is a complete deal that brings all the hostages home and ends the war!
Mothers of Gaza hostages stage protest outside Knesset to pressure gov’t for deal

A group of hostage mothers dressed in white stand in the middle of a larger circle of women inside the Knesset on Monday afternoon, part of Shift 101, a new protest movement that gathers silently outside government institutions in Jerusalem, aiming to pressure the government to return the hostages home. “It was not easy because you’re in a vulnerable place and you’re singing your pain, and almost nobody stopped,” says Idit Ohel, whose son, Alon Ohel, was taken captive from the Nova desert rave on October 7, 2023. “You’re thinking, ‘Okay, what do I need to do for them to say something, to say ‘We’re with you,’ or to stop and see it and feel it.”
“I don’t care how you do it,” says Ohel. “Just bring Alon-y home.”
It is the third week of Shift 101, and the first time these quiet activists have entered the Knesset. After standing and quietly singing in a main hallway of the government building, the mothers and activists with them rejoin others sitting in silent protest on Kaplan Street outside the Knesset, all in white on the chilly, November afternoon, some holding white umbrellas, as it begins to drizzle softly.

Shift 101 is not political, says Ohel, but rather all kinds of mothers and women and men who want the 101 remaining hostages to come home.
“We’re saying things in a different way,” adds Ohel. “I think it’s very powerful to be quiet because sometimes when you’re loud, nobody can hear.” link

Northern Israel - Lebanon/Hizbollah/Syria
The commander of Hezbollah’s medium-range rocket unit was killed in an airstrike yesterday in southern Lebanon, according to the IDF.
The previous commander of the unit was killed in a strike on Beirut in September.
Ali Tawfiq Dweiq was killed in an airstrike on the village of Jouz, adjacent to the southern Lebanon city of Nabatieh.
The medium-range rocket unit is responsible for attacks on Haifa and other areas deep in northern Israel, as well as central Israel. The IDF says Dweiq was responsible for over 300 rockets launched at Israel since he took over the role.
Since Sunday, the IDF says over 150 strikes were carried out against Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, including 25 weapon depots and some 30 rocket launchers. At least 11 strikes were carried out in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Hezbollah in the past week has launched some 400 rockets at Israel. Since Thursday, the IDF says, 22 out of 27 drones launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon were intercepted.
US special envoy Amos Hochstein says there is a “real opportunity” to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, after meeting Lebanon’s Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri in Beirut’s Ain el-Tineh Palace.
At a press conference after the meeting, Hochstein says, “I came back because we have a real opportunity to bring this conflict to an end.”
He adds that gaps between the sides have been “significantly narrowed.”
“I’m here in Beirut to facilitate that decision, but it’s ultimately the decision of the parties… It is now within our grasp,” he says.
He also says talks with Berri were “very constructive.” link As I have said all along regarding hostage deal negotiations, I will say about the north, until a deal is agreed upon and signed, it's all speculation.
The UN says over 200 children have been killed in Lebanon in the less than two months since Israel escalated its attacks targeting Hezbollah, after a year of the terror group assaulting the Jewish state.
“Despite more than 200 children killed in Lebanon in less than two months, a disconcerting pattern has emerged: their deaths are met with inertia from those able to stop this violence,” James Elder, spokesman for the UN children’s agency UNICEF, tells reporters in Geneva.
“Over the last two months in Lebanon, an average of three children have been killed every single day,” he says. link No one should doubt these numbers unless they are proved groundless, which I don't believe will happen. Our bombs don't disguish between children and the Hizbollah terrorists or other innocent civilians. We are killing children and in Gaza, we have killed upwards of 13,000 children since the beginning of the war. We cannot escape from these numbers, these facts, these children that we are responsible for killing.
Israeli troops operating in south Lebanon have encountered large amounts of Russian weaponry in the use of Hezbollah, in numbers greater than the military had expected, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to the paper, much of the weaponry apparently reached the terror group from Syria’s military, which has been supplied by Russia for years. Hezbollah’s cache of modern, sophisticated weaponry far exceeded prior military estimates in both quantity and capability, the Journal says, bolstering the group’s ability to strike and kill Israeli soldiers.
An Israeli airstrike without a prior evacuation warning destroyed a three-story building in Beirut’s southern suburbs overnight, according to Lebanese media.
Lebanese media report that several people were moderately wounded in the incident.

Lebanon and Hezbollah have agreed to a US proposal for a ceasefire with Israel, with some comments on the content, a top Lebanese official tells Reuters, describing the effort as the most serious yet to end to the fighting.
Ali Hassan Khalil, an aide to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, says Lebanon had delivered its written response to the US ambassador in Lebanon on Monday and that White House envoy Amos Hochstein was traveling to Beirut to continue talks.
There is no immediate comment from Israel.
Hezbollah, a heavily armed movement backed by Iran, endorsed its long-time ally Berri to negotiate over a ceasefire.
“Lebanon presented its comments on the paper in a positive atmosphere,” Khalil says, declining to give further details. “All the comments that we presented affirm the precise adherence to (UN) Resolution 1701 with all its provisions.”
He is referring to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended a previous war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006.
Its terms require Hezbollah to have no armed presence in the area between the Lebanese-Israeli border and the Litani River, which runs some 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the frontier — clauses the terror group violated from the get-go.
Khalil claims the success of the initiative now depended on Israel, saying if Israel did not want a solution, “it could make 100 problems.”
Khalil says Israel was trying to negotiate “under fire,” a reference to an escalation of its bombardment of Beirut and the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs. “This won’t affect our position.” link Israel will not agree to any deal that doesn't allow us free action to go after Hizbollah when it attacks again. Hizbollah, of course is against this provision as are many in Lebanon as it allows a foreign enemy permission to invade its airspace when it chooses to.
Separately, many ask why will we agree to a deal in the north but not in the south. In the north, Netanyahu can claim great successes and ending the war there is viewed as Netanyahu's gift to Trump. The war in the north is also not tied to Netanyahu's personal agenda which prevents the end of the war in the south: prevent an Official State Commision of Inquiry about October 7 and all that led up to it and the mishandling of the war; prevent a widening of calls for new elections; continue to delay Netanyahu's criminal trials until they failed government succeeds in passing the laws to overthrow the judicial system which would then mean the cancellation of charges against Netanyahu.
France’s defense minister urges the wealthy Gulf states to find ways to bolster Lebanon’s armed forces, saying they will be crucial for securing border areas after Israel’s war with Hezbollah.
As efforts towards a ceasefire increase, Sebastien Lecornu tells AFP that the Gulf monarchies, rich from oil and gas, should consider “operational support” for the Lebanese forces.
“I have reiterated to each counterpart that we need them to support the Lebanese armed forces,” Lecornu says after visits to Qatar and Saudi Arabia. “Both in the central role they play in welfare matters, and in the security aspect. We will have to think about more operational support on the military side.”
Lecornu was speaking in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi before meeting President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed at the end of his three-country tour.
“To secure the border between Israel and Lebanon, and to reinforce Lebanon’s sovereignty, the armed forces must be properly armed,” he adds. LINK This foreign support for the Lebanese army is a must. The Lebanese army is weak, lacking supplies, training and soldiers and the broken Lebanese government and economy cannot do anything to bolster the army under the current circumstances.

West Bank and Jerusalem and Terror attacks within Israel
- At least three Palestinian gunmen have been killed by Israeli troops during a raid in the Jenin area of the West Bank, a military source says.
Undercover Border Police officers surrounded a building in Qabatiya where several wanted Palestinians were holed up and carried out a tactic known as “pressure cooker,” which involves escalating the volume of fire against a building to flush suspects out.
No Israeli soldiers are injured. The operation is expected to continue in the coming hours.

Politics and the War (general news)
- PM reportedly asked Shin Bet to declare it unsafe for him to testify in criminal trial
Haaretz reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office recently asked the Shin Bet security service to provide a legal opinion against the premier testifying in his criminal trial on security grounds. With Netanyahu’s scheduled December 2testimony approaching, he wants the Shin Bet to tell the court that it is not safe for him to be spending long periods of time in the same publicly known location, given concerns of drone and missile attacks from Iranian proxies, Haaretz says.
The Shin Bet rejected the request from Netanyahu’s office, but has begun looking into how it can ensure the premier’s security throughout the trial.
Frustrated by the Shin Bet’s conduct, Netanyahu confidants have been urging him to fire the agency’s head Ronen Bar. The Walla news site reported that the premier considered the move, which Netanyahu’s office vehemently denied.
Notably, Netanyahu rejected calls to step down while on trial, insisting that he is capable of running the country while tending to his personal legal matters at the same time. Link. Netanyahu is looking for every possible way to delay hs trials. the court turned down his latest request for another delay again claiming the reason because of the war (one of the main reasons he will not end the war). This time the claim is that Iran is out to get him. When will he try saying that Sarah won't let him out to play.

Qatar officially confirms that Hamas officials are no longer in the country after they were asked to leave late last month amid an ongoing impasse in hostage negotiations.
An Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel over the weekend that Hamas leaders in Doha had left for Turkey last week.
On November 8, the Biden administration revealed that it had asked Qatar to oust Hamas leaders amid Washington’s frustration with the terror group rejecting repeated hostage deal proposals.
Qatar later confirmed asking Hamas to leave but insisted that it made the decision on its own due to frustration with both sides’ refusal to engage constructively in negotiations. Moreover, it framed the move as reversible, insisting that it is prepared to resume its role as mediator if Israel and Hamas change their approach to the talks.
To that end, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari says during a press conference that the Hamas political office in Doha has not been closed permanently. If such a decision is made, it will be announced by Qatar, and not through other means, he adds, in an apparent shot at Biden administration officials, who had announced the move on November 8.
In the meantime, al-Ansari says Hamas leaders are currently out of Doha and “are moving between different capitals.”
Turkey has confirmed that Hamas’s key foreign leaders are in Ankara while insisting that it has not opened an office for them — an apparent effort to avoid the ire of the Biden administration. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller still cautioned Turkey yesterday against hosting Hamas officials at all.
For its part, Israel has begun engaging more intensively with Turkish officials in order to jumpstart hostage negotiations. Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar traveled to Ankara over the weekend to meet with his Turkish counterpart on the matter.
The development may call into question the purpose of ousting Hamas from Doha, with the sides apparently planning to conduct negotiations in a similar manner in Ankara.

Former Israeli hostage confronts anti-Israel activist: ‘I’m asking you to check facts’
video of a former Israeli hostage confronting an anti-Israel activist on a panel has gone viral for the woman’s comments on coexistence and the need for activists to learn the facts on the conflict.
Moran Stella Yanai, who was held hostage for 54 days in Gaza before being freed in the November 2023 deal, recently took part in a panel on the Gaza conflict alongside Aidan Doyle, who was a leader of the anti-Israel encampment at UCLA. Mosab Hassan Yousef, the pro-Israeli disowned son of Hamas co-founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, was also on the panel.
Noting that she had worked with Arabs and had been friends with Arabs for years, Yanai confronted Doyle on his vociferous criticism of Israel.
“Have you ever been to Israel? Have you visited Gaza before? Probably not,” she said, which Doyle, visibly uncomfortable as she spoke, did not contest. “Did you know that the vast majority of the hostages believe in coexisting?”
“On October 7, and this is what [the terrorists] told me, they didn’t know about the Nova festival, they didn’t know that we have 3,000 people there. They planned, and they told me that, they planned to move on and kill as much as they could. In Beersheba, in Tel Aviv, in Haifa — they wanted to slaughter everybody.
“When I was entering Gaza and there is a video that I saw, 100% of civilians celebrating me being taken… All I saw was 100% of civilians lynching me, beating me up. I was with a broken leg. I had bruises all over my body. Do you know that I’ve never cursed them? I’ve never argued with them. And I’ve never treated them like garbage. I respected them even when they abused me, because I believe that if I want to be respected, I have to respect everybody else.
“So I’m asking you one thing and one thing only because I see you’re not comfortable. I’m asking you to check facts on both sides.” youtube video
Personal Stories Taken captive: Naama Levy, Hands of Peace project alumnus19-year-old, a seasoned triathlete, texted her mother to describe rockets and gunfire: ‘I’ve never heard anything like this in my life’
Naama Levy, 19, was taken captive by Hamas terrorists on October 7.
She last texted with her mother, Ayelet Levy, at 6:55 a.m.
“We’re in a secure space,” wrote Levy. “I’ve never heard anything like this in my life,” describing the stream of rockets and gunfire outside.
“She’s just 19,” her mother has said in multiple interviews.
Hours later, a Hamas video appeared on Telegram, showing Levy, her hands tied, her pants bottom covered in blood and smeared with dirt, her feet bare, being pulled by her hair from the back of a black pickup truck and then pushed into the back seat.
Levy is strong, say her family members. She’s a seasoned triathlete, used to the rigors of training and pushing past obstacles, traits that they hope are helping her withstand the trials, cruelties, and possible atrocities of Hamas captivity.
She’s also the great-granddaughter of Holocaust survivors and was a participant in the Hands of Peace project in the US, working toward peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Father of hostage Naama Levy says she was held separately from fellow soldiers
Addressing a press conference after the families of five surveillance soldiers held hostage in Gaza release images from the women’s first days in Gaza captivity, Yoni Levy, the father of Naama Levy, says she was held separately from her comrades.
“She wasn’t captured with the other girls, as we saw in the video with the jeep,” he says. “Naama was held for a long period by herself.”
Levy says the “latest information we have” is that Naama is “held in the tunnels and she is alive.”
“Therefore the only way to get her and the other girls out of the tunnels is a deal,” he says. “Not a military operation or anything else — only a deal will get the girls out.”
One image released today shows Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Agam Berger and Daniella Gilboa sitting on mattresses on the floor of a room.
A separate picture shows Levy with a black eye and a swollen face.
Levy was seen in a video from Gaza on October 7 following her kidnapping with her hands tied and bloodied sweatpants being pushed into a jeep, giving rise to widespread speculation that she had been sexually abused by her abductors.

She urges Netanyahu to meet with them immediately. “This is not the time for trips [to the US]. This is the time to close a deal and return the hostages.,” she says. link

Dark Legacy - The Abandonment of October 7th Hostages
Am I My Brother's Keeper?Uriel AbulofProfessor of Political Science, Tel Aviv University.
Come dawn, Bibi lies in bed, what thoughts has he in his head? Come dawn, Bibi stares at his reflection, for what does he retain affection? And what have we, but blood and tears? Who knows what nine is? Nine months of Bibi's tyranny and nine months of war. Eighteen months in the shadow of death sprung upon us by the offspring of the merciless, on blood-stained soil under an empty sky. I am transported in my mind to the first birth, the first slayer, Cain's burning jealousy of Abel, vanity, soul-consuming hatred, a knife gripped firmly in hand. He raised the knife and sacrificed a life, while debasing his soul to perpetuate his firstborn rule - an autocracy. Avenging his humiliation and likening himself to a God by taking the soul of his brother, while killing his own soul. Fearful, in the face of the true God, he could but lie and evade responsibility: "And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, ‘I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?’"By pursuing power and greed, by deceit, by hubris and cowardice, by his alliance with the enemies of Israel, Netanyahu is inflicting upon his people its greatest tragedy since the Holocaust. The voice of our brothers' and sisters' blood crieth unto us from the ground. The contemporary Cain does not slay with his own hands, but spreads animosity, hatred and poison, as Ze’ev Jabotinsky said: "The most toxic poison, which may poison a man's morals, lies in the word 'lawlessness,’” a keyword in the Kingdom of Cain wherein is emblazoned the sign: “Abandon.”"The Prime Sewer runs through Cain's body / and he will slay his brother”, to paraphrase the poem of Else Lasker-SchΓΌler, as if writing about Netanyahu himself as he is called to account for the Meron disaster. "One moment of silence please", begins the narrator of the poem, contemplating the death of those he could have saved, and promptly renouncing his responsibility for the death, since "who could have known that which I did not know". He briefly ponders and resolves: "I could not have known", shifting the responsibility to the dead, who failed to inform him. But the speaker is noble of spirit: "I do not blame him", imagining the dead sleepwalking, beating his breast, finally acknowledging the generosity of the speaker, since the dead did not know "to what extent" the speaker was with him. Does Netanyahu envisage the dead from the disasters he brought upon us - thousands killed, kidnapped, injured and scarred in body and spirit - walking in their sleep and thanking him?Netanyahu's dream is our nightmare, and we will emerge from it only once we realize that Bibi has abandoned us because we abandoned ourselves to him, to transform our country into the land of "I deserve it all/I can do as I wish". Mr. Abandonment is also Mr. With Abandon - and it is up to us to change that. If only we could place the Mark of Cain on his forehead - for shame but also protection - and release him from the obsession of "scare-divide-and-rule”. But we are human beings, so what can we do? This question too was well answered by Jabotinsky: "Not with revenge, not with arms, shall the sin of a Hebrew man against another be punished. The People will repay you, Cain, by voicing my song and sayings”. This song, we must write together, by building a new life in a free, democratic and Jewish Israel.
