Hostage Updates

  • The bodies of the abducted Amit Buskila, Yitzchak Galarenter and Shani Louk were recovered in a night operation by the Shin Bet and IDF. Their family members addressed the painful news, which some claimed also provided a sense of closure.
"The news is extremely, extremely difficult, a great tragedy has befallen us," said Shimon Atias, Amit Buskila's uncle, in an interview with Ofira and Avri Lison. "Amit was an only child to her mother, a single parent. We fought, went to rabbis and righteous people, turned the world upside down, but it ended - and not well. We are shattered and broken. We still have a difficult path ahead of us," he added.
"Amit loved to hang out and cook, all of that was cut short in cold blood," Shimon said. "I raised her like a father from a very young age. The home is ruined, her mother is ruined. The home is filled with thousands of people. We cannot digest this bitter news." He shared that despite not receiving information about Amit, her family tried to remain optimistic until the last moment. "We did not want to think about the worst thing," he said. "We believed that we would still receive a call that they found her alive, but I thank the Creator of the world who had mercy on us and she ascended very high, and merited being buried in the soil of Israel. Thanks to the fighters, the IDF and the state. I had many complaints, but I thank the Creator of the world who returned her to us even if she is not alive."

"No father expects his 23-year-old daughter to disappear from life and leave a big hole in his heart," said Nissim Louk, the father of Shani Louk, in an interview with Ofira and Avri Lison. "Today at 9 a.m. a team of IDF soldiers who accompanied us throughout this period came to us and notified us. The amazing thing is that I asked to see pictures - so they showed me a picture of her and she really looks in excellent condition, as if she is alive, it surprised me. I immediately identified her by her tattoos," he added.
"Shani was always a daughter of dance and freedom, she had a good life and it was really cut off in the middle," Nissim said. He also spoke about his visit to the US, during which he met communities and told the story of his daughter. "The moment they heard Shani's father was coming, thousands came. When we spoke to them, I said that Shani is special because there is a picture of her on one side that she is amazing and dancing and beautiful, and on the other side there is a picture of her on the flatbed truck, this shocking sight. It's very difficult to see but you have to understand that when you see it, you understand what light and darkness are, what good and evil are," he added. "The people of Israel sometimes have a question mark as to whether we are good or bad - so just look at the pictures and you'll understand for yourself, no need for too much interpretation. I also said the same sentences to UN representatives. Please God, on Sunday evening we will probably bring her for burial."

"There was hope that he was alive, we clung to a very deep faith," said Jorden Pivko, the daughter of Yitzchak Galarenter, in an interview with "Ulpan Shishi." "On Thursday of Sukkot we ate lunch together and on Friday he was invited to my place. In the end he didn't come but we spoke. That Shabbat we already had no contact with him. He went to hang out with three friends at a party, to listen to music and dance. Unfortunately for him and for us, he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time."
"The truth is that the fact that we received the message, that we have closure for this terrible and awful event that we went through and are still going through, the entire people of Israel, I look up and thank the Holy One, Blessed Be He, who gave us an end, and I wish a better end for the other families," she added.  link

  • Temporary Freeze of Negotiations or Expanding the Mandate? Disagreements in the Cabinet Meeting

The tense situation with Egypt and the lack of leverage on Sinwar led Ronen Bar and Dadi Barnea to conclude that they should wait before resuming negotiations. On the other hand, Gantz and Eisenkot are calling for an immediate expansion of the negotiating team's mandate - arguing: it's not enough to say that now is not a good time. At the extended cabinet meeting, they were forced to wait and threatened: if this happens again - we'll go home.

It seems that as the days of fighting go by, the tones in the cabinet discussions are rising and the disagreements are becoming more and more substantive. Ronen Bar and Dadi Barnea, who are leading the negotiations, are convinced that now, in the shadow of the tensions with Egypt and Hamas' rigid policy - this is not the right time to resume negotiations. Bar and Barnea are concerned that resuming negotiations will only raise the price.

They claim Sinwar is in a relatively strong position, where he is sitting and waiting. He sees the situation in Rafah, the rift with the US, and the discussions against Israel in The Hague. At this stage, he has no reason to rush, no clear interest or leverage being applied to him.

As we reported yesterday (Friday) on "Ulpan Shishi" - a senior member of the negotiating team for the prisoner exchange deal said he believes expanding operations in Rafah could endanger the captives - physically and indirectly. The Prime Minister Netanyahu does want to expand the operation, but according to that senior negotiator, Sinwar believes expanding operations in Rafah will complicate Israel politically, a complication that could even lead to a halt in operations - so why would he give up captives? Action in Rafah is not leverage on Sinwar, perhaps even the opposite.

Facing them, inside the cabinet discussions, are Gantz and Eisenkot calling for an expansion of the negotiating team's mandate. Gantz and Eisenkot are calling for an immediate expansion of the negotiating team's mandate. This leads to an exchange with the Mossad chief, during which they ask him: 'What are you doing to advance the negotiations? It's not enough to say it's not good for us now.'

Now on the table is the dilemma of expanding operations in Rafah, after the entire cabinet unanimously voted to initiate military action. In parallel, pressure is also being applied by ministers of the extended cabinet. While Nitzan Alon, the IDF representative in the negotiations, gave a briefing - outside the extended cabinet discussion, ministers caused an uproar. They protested that last week they had to wait over 3.5 hours. Minister Miri Regev made it clear: if we have to wait like that again, we'll go home.

These disagreements come just before Jake Sullivan's visit to Israel. The White House National Security Advisor will arrive from Saudi Arabia, likely with a clear message for Israel: This is the last chance - if you want the deal, now is the time. link  If the report is true that Bar and Barnea think that negotiating now will increase the price that Sinwar will demand, it means that, with all of their background and intelligence, they have learned nothing. As I have written many times, my brother's 17 years' of talking and negotiating with Hamas (for the release of the soldier Gilad Schalit and for cease fire talks in previous military operations) has taught him many things about Hamas. Their opening 'salvo' in negotiations is not meant as a starting point and then to negotiate from there through compromise and give and take. Their opening position is the end position as well. In the case of Gilad Schalit, they made their demands known a short time after kidnapping him out of his tank which was disabled by an RPG and his other crew mates were killed. 5 years and 4 months later, they got exactly what they demanded in the beginning. They didn't budge a bit. Today, the only flexibility they may show is in the amount and type of Palestinian prisoners to be released for each hostage, in the first stage which is the 'humanitarian' hostage release (women, children elderly, sick and injured). In the further stage(s), the numbers will be vastly different. Sinwar has made it his life's mission to 'empty out the Israeli prisons of Palestinian prisoners' and here, there will be no flexibility, negotiation or compromise. If we make a deal today or in 5 years, the terms that Hamas demands will not change.

  • My brother's twitter post - "To be clear: Hamas is responsible for the murder of the hostages, but the military pressure won’t bring them home, only a deal with Hamas will bring them home." and "The military pressure is killing hostages!! Bring them home now!!!!!" link My brother has 17 years experience talking and negotiating with Hamas, he has spent more time talking to them than any other Israeli except those in the Prison Services and has a better understanding of their thinking than every member of the government. No amount of military pressure will push them into a better deal. Hamas is not like any other negotiating 'partner'. There is no compromise, no flexibility, no changes to their demands. The only way we will get our hostages home is through a deal, a painful deal. The military operation that brought back 3 hostage bodies (maybe more) was good, but it is only the 4th instance of a military rescue operation in the 7 months of war. We aren't going to get the rest of the living hostages back in rescue operations, unfortunately.

  • The classified presentation shown to Sinwar: The IDF releases intelligence on Hamas' mole planted in Islamic Jihad::  The IDF exposed the spies positioned in mosques - and passing internal information to Hamas • The apparatus penetrated the ranks of Islamic Jihad and other terrorist organizations in the Strip - monitoring journalists, defaming them and threatening their lives •

IDF Arabic Spokesman Lt. Col. Avichay Edri revealed on Wednesday new documents about Hamas' General Security Services apparatus (Mukhabarat), drawn from databases of thousands of operatives, including names and personal numbers of agents and handlers. This is a covert espionage apparatus whose purpose is to preserve Hamas' rule in Gaza. Among its founders are Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar and a member of the organization's political bureau, Rawhi Mushtaha. This same espionage apparatus operates in the shadows to monitor and report meticulously on aspects of life in the Strip, and ruthlessly suppress any activity that deviates from Hamas' path.

The IDF notes that Hamas has recruited thousands of spies for this Mukhabarat and embedded them in the civilian sphere. The agents are positioned in mosques and all centers of life in Gaza and report on the activities of their friends, neighbors and acquaintances. In addition, the agents infiltrate the ranks of Islamic Jihad and other factions in the Strip in order to interfere in their internal politics. It also monitors journalists and human rights activists who criticize Hamas, publicly defames them and threatens their lives.

The secret documents revealed are excerpts from the presentation made to Sinwar on the organization and the reporting method of a Hamas militant planted in Islamic Jihad. They expose the planted mole - Murad Walid Omar Shahin, who joined the ranks of Islamic Jihad in 2010, where he served in the intelligence department of the military wing.

In 2022, an officer in Hamas' General Security Services, the Mukhabarat Taher Mahmoud Taher Al-Aqad - recruited Shahin to work as a spy for Hamas, passing information on the activities of Islamic Jihad and serving as a double agent. Thus, Shahin passed sensitive internal information to Hamas about Islamic Jihad operatives and the figures being considered for promotion. The information Shahin provided to Hamas included references to internal tensions within the terrorist organization, military information on the geographic deployment of its operatives, as well as information about purchasing surveillance equipment and the reasons for halting tunnel digging operations.

During the presentation of Hamas' General Security Services apparatus to Yahya Sinwar, his officers reviewed their espionage method within Islamic Jihad, alongside their influential work on internal guidelines. "The Mukhabarat operatives work covertly to preserve Hamas' rule in Gaza, and in the coming days they will be exposed," Lt. Col. Edri concluded. link

  • The United States on Friday evacuated out of Gaza 17 American doctors who had been stuck since an Israeli takeover of the Rafah Crossing closed the border with Egypt, official sources say.

US diplomats arranged for the 17 doctors to leave through the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Israel.

“Some of the US citizen doctors who had been stuck in Gaza have now safely departed and made their way to safety with assistance from the US embassy in Jerusalem,” a State Department spokesperson says.

“We have been in close contact with the groups that these US doctors are part of, and we have been in contact with the families of these US citizens,” he says.

A source familiar with the operation said that three other US citizen doctors who were part of the volunteer medical mission chose to stay despite the uncertainty on when they will again have a chance to leave. link

  • The Israeli Air Force struck more than 70 targets across the Gaza Strip in the past day, the military says, as ground forces operate in Rafah, Jabaliya, and the Netzarim Corridor.

According to the IDF, the targets included weapon depots, infrastructure, and buildings belonging to terror groups, as well as operatives.

One of the airstrikes in Rafah hit a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative, who the IDF says was head of logistics for the terror group in the city in southern Gaza. “As part of his role, he was responsible for preparing the enemy for the IDF maneuver in Rafah,” the military says.

In eastern Rafah, the military says troops of the Givati Brigade spotted and killed an RPG-wielding operative in a building near them. Givati troops raided several sites in the area, locating weapons, the IDF adds.

Also in eastern Rafah, the Egoz commando unit located a rocket launcher at a building used by terror groups, the IDF says.

Meanwhile in Jabaliya in the Strip’s north, the IDF says the Paratroopers Brigade killed several gunmen during several engagements; the 7th Armored Brigade located a primed rocket launcher and killed several more gunmen in battles; and the 460th Armored Brigade located several tunnel shafts and killed an RPG-wielding operative.

In the Strip’s center, the 99th Division continued to battle gunmen in the Netzarim Corridor area, including by calling in airstrikes, the IDF says.

In one incident in central Gaza, troops of the 414th Combat Intelligence Collection Unit spotted a cell that had fired RPGs at troops and directed a drone to strike and kill the operatives, the army adds.  link

  • Troops of the 460th Armored Brigade operating in the outskirts of northern Gaza’s Jabaliya located and destroyed a weapons and long-range rocket manufacturing site, along with other military equipment, the IDF says.

The military publishes images from the site and some of the equipment that was seized by the troops.

Northern Israel - Lebanon/Hizbollah

  • The Israeli military confirms carrying out an airstrike in eastern Lebanon’s Majdal Anjar, close to the border with Syria, killing a top al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya operative who worked alongside Hamas.

The IDF says the drone strike targeted and killed Sharhabil Sayed. Hamas has claimed Sayed as a member, rather than an affiliate.

Sayed, according to the IDF, was a senior member of al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya who “led and advanced numerous terror attacks from Lebanese territory against Israel in [Lebanon’s] eastern region in the recent period… in cooperation with the Lebanon branch of the Hamas terrorist organization.”

Hamas in an official statement claimed Sayed as a commander in the terror group.

The IDF says the strike was aimed at “causing a blow to the organization’s abilities to advance and carry out terror operations that it had planned in the recent period and in the near future against the State of Israel on the northern border.”  video of the attack

  • "Clear and Immediate Danger": Hezbollah's Commando Unit Still on the Border

The grueling training exercises, the training under the supervision of Iranian commandos, and the flagship program that went into partial freeze. For over 7 months now, the operatives of the "Radwan Force" have been sitting on the fence trying to breach Israel's defenses. But despite the IDF's activity in Lebanon, Hezbollah's commando unit has not lost its capabilities: "It could infiltrate into Israeli territory."

The intense selection process, the training under the watchful eye of Iranian commandos, and the flagship program that went into a partial freeze. It has been over 7 months since the operatives of the "Radwan Force" have been sitting on the border, trying to breach Israeli defenses. But despite the IDF's operations in Lebanon, Hezbollah's elite commando unit has not lost its capabilities: "It could infiltrate into Israeli territory."

For Hezbollah's elite commando unit, the "Radwan Force," the threat remains clear and immediate. The punishing training regimen, oversight by Iranian commando instructors, and their flagship infiltration program - while partially frozen - mean this force is still poised to try and strike at Israel's defenses. Even with the IDF's operations in Lebanon, this Hezbollah unit has retained its offensive capabilities, with assessments it could attempt to infiltrate into Israeli territory.  link

The Radwan forces have been compared to the Nukhba forces of Hamas (the main force that committed the atrocities of October 7). Compared to Radwan forces, it is said that the Nukhba are in kindergarten. The Radwan forces have vast battle experience from fighting on behalf of Assad in the latest Syrian civil war and are credited with helping preserve his regime.

  • Lebanese media report an alleged Israeli strike on a vehicle near the eastern town of Masnaa, close to the Syrian border. No further details are immediately available.

  • Israeli fighter jets struck a rocket launcher and buildings used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon’s Kounine and Khiam overnight, the military says. The IDF says it also shelled areas near Hanine with artillery to “remove threats.”  This morning, two projectiles were fired toward the Biranit army base on the Lebanon border. The IDF says no injuries or damage were caused in the attack.

West Bank

  • An Israeli military spokesperson updated overnight (between Friday and Saturday) that an Israeli Air Force fighter jet and attack helicopter struck in Jenin in the Menashe Brigade area. In the strike, Islam Humaydah, a key wanted individual in the Jenin camp who was responsible for a series of attacks in the area, including a shooting attack carried out in Hermesh in May of last year in which Meir Tamari was killed, and another attack at the Efraim Intersection in June of last year in which Israelis were injured, was eliminated.

According to the Israeli military statement, Air Force aircraft, with intelligence guidance from the Shin Bet security service, struck a building used as an operations headquarters by a terror infrastructure in Jenin. The building sheltered several militants, including those involved in carrying out shooting attacks in the Jenin area and who were also planning to carry out additional attacks in the near future. The Palestinians reported two dead and eight injured.

On March 20th, the IDF eliminated a militant cell in an airstrike in Jenin - including Ahmed Barkhat, the operations commander of the Jenin Brigade of Islamic Jihad and one of the perpetrators of the attack in Hermesh last May. link

Politics and the Region

  • Sullivan will push Netanyahu on avoiding full-scale Rafah op in Sunday meeting::US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will stress in his talks with the Israelis the need to go after Hamas fighters in Gaza in a targeted way, not with a full-scale assault on the southern city of Gaza, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby tells reporters.

Sullivan will visit Saudi Arabia on Saturday and arrive in Israel on Sunday.

Kirby says Sullivan in his talks with the Saudis will discuss “bilateral and regional matters including the war in Gaza of course and ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace and security in the region.”

Kirby says Sullivan’s talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials will include Rafah. Israel has threatened a broad offensive in Rafah but the operation is opposed by the United States out of concern for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who fled there to get out of the way of fighting elsewhere in Gaza.

Kirby says Sullivan will argue for a more targeted approach against Hamas militants in Rafah. He also says Sullivan will discuss recent stalled efforts to reach a deal with Hamas on the release of sick, elderly and wounded hostages held since the militants seized hostages in southern Israel on October 7.  link

  • Heated Debate in the Cabinet on the Operation in Rafah - Eisenkot to Ben-Gvir: "Take Off Your Shoes, Draft-Dodger"
In the extended cabinet, the stalled deal on the release of the captives was discussed. During the meeting, the gaps were highlighted between the participants in the cabinet - those who hold the position that the operation should be expanded and those who are pushing for a deal with Hamas. During the debate, the Minister for National Security Ben-Gvir expressed his position in a way that managed to arouse the anger of some of the participants - especially Minister Eisenkot who told him: "Take off your shoes, draft-dodger."

A senior member of the negotiating team said during the discussion on the stalled deal that "without leverage on Hamas there will be nothing - only then will they come to a deal." Ben-Gvir responded by saying "we need to enter Rafah now." In response, the National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi answered the Minister of National Security, "We are inside Rafah." Ben-Gvir retorted, "Don't try to fool us. We are on the outskirts of Rafah - not in the heart of Rafah." Regev continued Ben-Gvir's words and defiantly added the word: "It's a Rafah dardala (trickle)." At another point in the debate, after Ben-Gvir interrupted Minister Gadi Eisenkot's words, the former IDF Chief of Staff responded with the harsh words: "Take off your shoes, draft-dodger." (quoting a verse from the biblical book of Exodus, which ends “…for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” )
Israel to Present Americans with Plan to Expand Operation in Rafah
Although there is no full consensus among the extended cabinet, an overwhelming majority of ministers believe the operation in Rafah should be expanded. Next Sunday, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will arrive in Israel, and Israel's direction is already clear - it intends to present the Americans with plans to expand operations in the southern city.
Israel intends to present the advisor with operational plans that will include a gradual expansion of the operation. This will include, among other things, a reliable evacuation plan for residents of Rafah, of whom 800,000 have already been evacuated. During the advisor's visit, the leadership in Israel will need to convince the Americans that their reservations will be taken into account. link

  • British security firm Ambrey says it has received information that a Panama-flagged crude oil tanker was reportedly “attacked” approximately 10 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s Mocha. It adds that the communication indicated vessel was hit by a missile. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have been attacking shipping in the region since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

  • The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency says that it received a report of an incident on a vessel in the Red Sea, 76 nautical miles northwest of Yemen’s Hodeidah. The captain confirms that the ship sustained slight damage after it was “struck by an unknown object,” UKMTO says in a statement.
The crew is safe and the vessel is continuing to its next port of call, the statement says, adding that authorities are investigating.

The Iran-backed Houthis, a US-designated terror organization that controls the most populous parts of Yemen, has staged attacks on ships in the waters off the country for months in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid the ongoing war.

The repeated drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden since November have forced shippers to re-route cargo on longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa and stoked fears the Israel-Hamas war could spread and destabilize the Middle East.

  • Two senior American officials held indirect meeting with Iranian officials in Oman this week in an effort to avoid a regional escalation, according to the Axios news site.
The talks focused on “clarifying the consequences of actions by Iran and its proxies in the region and to discuss US concerns regarding the status of Iran’s nuclear program,” according to two sources quoted in the report.
A government official confirms to the Times of Israel that White House Middle East czar Brett McGurk and special envoy on Iran Abram Paley were in Oman this week for the talks.
McGurk was also in Saudi Arabia this week, according to the same official.
Axios says it was unclear who represented Iran at the Oman talks and there was no official statement from either country.
The talks come after Iranian threats in recent weeks that Tehran will change its doctrine on nuclear weapons — currently banned under a fatwa by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — if its existence is threatened by Israel.
Similar talks were held between the United States and Iran in Oman January, when reportedly Tehran asked the Biden administration to secure a ceasefire in ongoing Gaza war while Washington pressed the Islamic Republic to curb attacks by its proxies. link
  • Austria will release funds to the UN’s Palestinian relief organisation UNRWA that were blocked after allegations agency staff were involved in the October 7 Hamas assault on Israel.

Vienna’s decision comes after UNRWA set out an action plan to better ensure its impartiality, strengthen internal reviews and improve how its staff are monitored.

“After a thorough analysis of the action plan, we will release funds to UNRWA again,” the Austrian foreign ministry says.

Funds totaling 3.4 million euros ($3.70 million) have been budgeted for 2024, with the first payment due to be made in the summer, it adds.

Austria was one of the donor states to freeze some $450 million in funds after Israel accused 12 UNRWA staff of participating in the Hamas-led attack, in which terrorists killed some 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took 252 hostages, an event that triggered the Gaza war.

Several UNRWA employees were documented taking part in the massacres and kidnapping Israelis.

Israel has also repeatedly shown terrorists using UNRWA facilities in Gaza.
